Lovely setting. Very professional service without being intimidating.
All three courses were excellent and less expensive than we had expected.

“Outstanding experience”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

This has probably got to be the best restaurant in Suffolk if not in East Anglia! It is fairly small and very elegant without being stuffy. We were as always made very welcome when we arrived on a busy Saturday before Christmas, with staff immediately assisting with coats, hats and a not very mobile guest. The menu always has something to please everyone and the food is deceptively unpretentious and delicious There is a is very sensibly priced lunch menu and an excellent selection of wines, some available by the glass, at very reasonable prices. The cheese board is outstanding: a wonderful selection, all in perfect condition and I was able to choose exactly what I wanted. The French staff are all knowledgeable about the food they serve, well-trained and obviously take great pride and pleasure in their work. The value for money is outstanding.

“How do they do the quality for the money?”
Reviewed December 27, 2013

Four of us ate for £160 including one glass of wine and bottles of water 2 coffees and petit fours and two extra dishes.

The food was very very good and the service excellent. In fact the service made a very good meal truly memorable.
It is a fixed price menu at £33 for three courses on 23rd December 2013.
The choice is almost a la carte in terms of the number of dishes, vegetarian, fish and meat.
OK ingredients tend to the cheaper, but what do you want?
However I still managed Foie Gras Ballontine which was excellent for the money and some big lumps of roast veal with a lovely rose centre.
Free green vegs and refills! Not bad.
Excellent puddings.
Portions are British /French size, not American which at this time of year is most welcome, but unless you value size over quality you won't leave hungry.
We had a trio of Tuna, smoked, sushi and sausage as an extra for the table, as it sounded interesting. The chef is creative and inventive. "Yes OK the pork was a cheap cut, but it was delicious."
We also had one cheese serving between us.
A good and well spaced, geographically, cheese board.
Excellent deserts, including the old faithfuls and some special things. I was a bit shocked by my lemon tart, which looked nothing like I had expected, but is was very good once in the mouth.
The petit fours were a bit limited, but were given to the non coffee drinkers as well. How nice.
Similarly the extras for the Tuna and The Cheese were given to four people based on only one dish ordered.
It is like that a generous restaurant.
Wine is very well priced as well.

Must book and possibly a taxi, but well worth it.
I tend to choose restaurants by whether I like them and not on price so the price was a welcome surprise.
I should add that my son is a chef and I taught him everything he knows. So two totally critical diners were well satisfied.
I left a bigger tip than usual.

“Superb meal - fifth year running - A gem of a restaurant!”
Reviewed December 22, 2013

Our annual trip across Cambridgeshire and Suffolk to this fabulous restaurant was well worth it again - now our fifth pre-Christmas meal there...

Service is superbly French - discreet and efficient! Décor and atmosphere perfect...

The menu had some wonderful choices, all well priced, and with some great flavour combinations - classic French cooking with some great new takes! Portion sizes were appropriate and allowed us to dine on their 3-course festive luncheon menu.

From their current menu we certainly could recommend the delicious starters served with some great herbs, dressings and tasty breads - Tuna Rillette, Game Pate, Fois Grois, Chicken Skewers. The mains did not disappoint and the Confit of Pork; Confit of Swordfish, Creamed Salmon wrapped in Sea Bream... with dainty vegetables served to perfection.

Four delicious puddings topped this fabulous meal off - light cream & fruit crumble cup, Earl Grey crème brulee, and deliciously warm and oozing chocolate tartlets.

Over coffee and home made petit fours, we declared it to be another triumph from the Chef and team at the Lavenham Great House!

The selection of wines was excellent, and we had a superb Chablis to accompany our delicately flavoured food choices, after our aperitifs of Kia Royale...

We could not recommend this restaurant enough - and so charmingly situated on the Market Square!

“Fantastic as always”
Reviewed December 20, 2013

Dinner here to celebrate Christmas with dear friends was absolutely wonderful. I think I made the perfect choice from the menu, Fois Gras,Scottish Beef and Hollandaise and Chocolate Parfait, just amazing, though to be frank every other plate which appeared from the kitchen looked as good. The service was impeccable, the staff are charming at every level. Can't wait to go back, I love it.
