“Excellent afternoon tea In a lovely hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2011

Having visited the village of Lavenham with its historic buildings, including the Guildhall, we just had to visit the Swan for afternoon tea to complete our afternoon out. My wife and I had the traditional tea which was served in one of the lounges by very friendly smiling staff who looked after us well (thank you Nicola and Cally). A selection of sandwiches, cakes & scones (with cream and jam) - all on cake stands. The tea was not only very welcome but 'just like home' - in a teapot and not a tea bag in sight. Proper tea. Excellent meal and excellent service in a hotel with bags of historical character which the recent refurbishment has not spoilt - even down to the famous airmens bar with autographs of serving USAF airmen still on the wall. Given hotel staff were catering for & dealing with a wedding, guests like us walking in off the street presented no problem to them. A fitting end to an extremely pleasant afternoon out. Thank you The Swan.

I've wanted to visit the Swan for many years and so I was thrilled to find my partner had booked this as a Birthday treat... one night, dinner, bed and breakfast in a Suite. I was not disappointed. The suite was amazing being over 3 levels, the staff were fantastic and so attentive. We'd booked a late evening table in the restaurant as we wanted to make the most of the day but feeling hungry we decided we'd let them know we were in the hotel a little while before our table time in case we could go through earlier. However, they beat us to it and we were very surprised when they came to find us at the bar with menus and canapés. A really nice touch followed by the wine we had ordered arriving only after they had spotted us finishing our pre-dinner Martini’s. Perfect.

The food was lovely, although my partner thought the cooked breakfast was too small, but having eaten late the night before I was happy and it was very well cooked.

The Swan is stunning both inside and out and although it was busy there Saturday night it was very quiet when we went to bed and the gardens were very peaceful in the day time so it made a lovely base to recharge our batteries. I’d definitely go back, maybe over Christmas.

Now this was not a cheap treat, but when time is precious and being spoiled for once is just what you need, I’d definitely recommend a night or two here.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 58, the constable suite. Its away from the main part of the hotel, overlooking a g...

We have just spent 3 nights at The Swan, having wanted to stay here for 37 years but have just never found the time to do until now! The Travelzoo offer was an opportunity not to be missed and our only regret is that we have never stayed here before.

We cannot complement the hotel enough - as discerning travellers who have stayed in many top class hotels this comment is not made lightly. Each and everyone of the friendly, attentive staff had only one aim - and that was to make us feel welcome, comfortable and cared for. They certainly succeeded - and gave the impression that it was all effortless, although they have all clearly worked extremely hard on their customer service skills.

the food was first class - individually cooked breakfasts served at the table (not a luke warm, greasy breakfast buffet in sight - which is sadly so common at most hotels these days); warm, home made scones for afternoon tea and first class evening meals in the restaurant. Portion sizes were ample, yet not too large, meaning that there was still room for the delicious desserts!!

All in all, we cannot praise The Swan high enough - we left our 3 day stay feeling rested, relaxed and looking forward to returning again soon - we certainly won't be leaving it another 37 years!!

Thank you so much to each and every one of you for such a wonderful experience.

We stay here two or three times a year now, and its got better and better. The new refurbishment is excellent - smart and super comfortable but unpretentious and enhancing ancient charm of this important building. Lounge areas are extensive and full of cosy nooks and corners. Rooms are very clean, spacious and soothingly well furnished. Service from the staff is unfailingly good, they seem a very happy and well managed team. Nothing seems too much trouble. The (new?) chef is really good - we had several excellent meals in the dinning area, one night to live piano music. Well-behaved children are very well looked after, even during the more 'grown-up' formal evening service. If yours are a little bouncy, you can eat in the brasserie which is just as nice in a less formal way. Breakfasts are always lovely, to the standard of the evening service. The dining and bar area spills out into a lovely garden too. You could have pouring rain for your entire holiday and not mind because you won't want to leave the hotel!!

We stayed at The Swan in late May. We had a gorgeous room and the hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. They were in the process of renovations so that was slightly annoying because we had to go a roundabout way to and from our room. We booked at the restaurant and I found it to be overpriced, the food outdated and the wait staff to be rude. We had made reservations and were shown to a table in the middle of the dining room. When we asked to sit near one of the windows we were refused yet those tables were empty all night. Our server would disappear for long periods of time so we sat with empty wine glasses as did other tables. It took 25 minutes to get a glass of wine - I was done with my meal by the time he came back with it. Our breakfast was nice but it was the same staff we had at dinner. We will definitely stay at The Swan again but we'll have dinner elsewhere.

Many thanks for sharing your feedback following your visit to the Swan at Lavenham.

I was very pleased to read that you loved the hotel and its facilities - sorry to hear about the shortfalls in the Restaurant. It seems that we let ourselves down on this particular occasion and failed to demonstrate our usual high standards of customer service - please accept my sincerest apologies.

I look forward to meeting you personally on your return visit to the Swan.

I thought for our 10th wedding anniversary I would surprise my wife with a stay at The Swan Hotel. We had heard that is was excellent and it didn't disappoint. The staff were courteous and a wedding anniversary card left in our room was a nice touch.
The decor is stunning and in keeping with the history. We particularly liked the bar area with all the memorabilia from the American World War 11 servicemen.
The restaurant food was delicious, just the right amount, the service efficient without being intrusive and again a lovely atmosphere. Everything is on hand for you, nothing too much trouble and the staff could not be faulted. We will definitely be back.
