We recently visited Great House for Saturday lunch. This was our first visit, but we shall certainly be back. We went on very strong recommendations, and our friends were right. It was, as has been said before, an establishment that paid great attention to detail, and a wonderful return to standards of service and presentation which seem to be entirely missing from most other restaurants these days. We were made to feel very special. We were greeted at the door, and our coats were hung up for us. The service was immediate, and our drinks were served quickly. The price for a three course lunch was reasonable, and although we did not have heaped plates, the food was exquisite and sufficient to satisfy without leaving you podged out and uncomfortable. The wine was good too. The waiter was very understanding about my difficulty in not being able to eat wheat and dairy. Delicious alternatives were suggested, and I didn't leave feeling that I'd missed out, as I so often do from restaurants. We had a four month old baby with us, and the staff took time to talk to her and amuse her. I loved this dining experience, and can't wait to return. Thanks to all the staff at The Great House.

A beautiful period house turned boutique hotel and restaurant. We stayed for a weekend in February and we just fell in love with Lavenham and the hotel. Our room was gorgeous, very old with a sweet little bathroom with wonky windows - just how the Tudors build it! I wouldn't hesitate recommending this hotel to anyone, we had such a special weekend here. We ate in the restaurant on the Friday and Saturday and the food was absolutely outstanding. I'd LOVE to return!

It's become our custom to eat at the Great House 2 or 3 times a year especially on birthdays and anniversaries. We have never been disappointed either by the food, the wine list or the service. If you have never visited Lavenham it's worth allowing a couple of hours to look at the architecture in this beautiful town. Whether you do this to work up an appetite or to walk off an excess is up to you! Either way, your dining experience will be outstanding. The restaurant's interior is interesting and has well spaced tables and starched white table linen. It is not noisy and fellow diners have never seemed to be intrusive. The food is inventive, French and served professionally by pleasant and caring staff. The wine list is comprehensive and suits all tastes and pockets. The cheese selection is amongst the best I have ever experienced anywhere in the world, let alone East Anglia. Parking is generally easy to find nearby. What more could you want?

First the good: the service, and the staff are friendly and professional. The average: the food, well presented and well cooked but it is not different from many French restaurants. The verdict: you can eat at this restaurant once but you will find better ones to spend your money. I just came back from Paris and had a wonderful meal in an ordinary typical French restaurant without any pomp or ceremony and it was far much better. You will find this restaurant "a treat", "perfection", or "superb" If you do not have any experience of authentic good French food in France, where eating is a pleasure not an elitist experience.

We visited for a Sunday lunch. First impressions are of a lovely and tastefully restored and maintained historic building, with sympathetic slightly modern decor. The tables are spaced out enough to allow for an intimate atmosphere while still creating a nice buzz in the room.

For sunday lunch there is a set menu at £33.50 a head for three courses - wine and coffee are separate. The menu was divine looking and both myself and my wife could happily chosen from any of three for each course. The food was divine, with great depth of flavour, wonderful presentation and each dish left a long lingering taste on the palate. Each dish was very good but special mention has to go to the smoked pork shin with a lemon sauce. This was a unique and special dish, with a complex flavour balance which really worked - I think it is one of the best dishes I have ever tasted. Desserts were to die for and the petit fours served with the coffee really did top the meal off wonderfully. This is a French restaurant, but the cooking has a wonderful French/English fusion and the dishes are not overly fussy. Precise and wonderful but not too far into the fussy French food I am not so keen on.

The wine list is fantastic, with the ability to have a glass, half a litre, half a bottle or a full bottle - superbly democratic with prices to suit all budgets. We had a syrah which was so smooth and soft. There is also a wonderful list of local ales and it is a tough choice whether to opt for wine or beer.

The service was spotless and the owner and all his staff warm and friendly.

It is quite expensive but worth what you pay. Quite simply a lovely memorable experience and we will be back.

We did not stay overnight - but boy we wished we had.

We have stayed here once before, several years ago on a hot July night and was in their 'attic' room which was very hot indeed.
This time we were in room number 2 and is a very large room indeed. Two double beds as twins and a nice bathroom down a tiny little entrance leading off the bedroom. One little note - why does no one look at the light fitting hanging down from the ceiling over the mirror and not working? The room was not disappointing and the beds lovely and comfortable. We had dinner planned for 8pm and went down for drinks at 7.45 but were shown to our table as there is no where to sit before dinner. Dinner was good but I did think portions were very small. My main course was pork the dimentions of which were 2.5 inches by 1 inch and the vegetables were small enough for one but we had to share between two. No potatoes. I nice 4 course meal but 'nice' not special. We filled up on bread that was freely given....no extra butter though!
Breakfast was good. My partner had the full English I had the continental.
Yes, a nice place to stay but so it should....our bill for just one night including dinner was £267

My daughter treated us to lunch here on Sunday 10th March 'Mothering Sunday' and it was superb. This restaurant never fails and is our very favorite in the area. From the moment you are met at the door until you leave it is an experience, and the food is amazing.
