From the outside the Angel is a lovely historic hotel ideally located opposite the Abbey and surrounded by beautiful Georgian buildings. The interior has had a modern makeover probably in an attempt to achieve an edgy boutique hotel feel. I think it is out of character. We stayed in a coach house room which was in a nondescript annexe probably constructed in the eighties. The decor was tired and the bathrooms outdated. Breakfast was adequate but the coffee was disappointingly thin. Service is efficient and friendly. Prices are reasonable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building.

Myself and my husband chose to stay at the angel for one night for our anniversary, luckily we are from the area and so knew where to find the car park at the back of the hotel easily. We were so impressed as we pulled up as a member of staff was there, waiting for guests to offer a hand with luggage, he also explained that they would be happy to move our car for us in the event that they had to block us in due to the number of guests staying. He escorted us to reception and even took our bags to our room!
Our room wasn't massive but was clean and the bathroom was lovely. All the staff were friendly. We chose not to eat at the hotel due to the pricey looking menu so I am unable to comment on the quality of the food. instead we ate in a restaurant only a few minutes walk away seeing as it was such a lovely warm evening (there are lots of them nearby - something to suit everyones taste!)
only a couple of things could have made our stay better 1) the sash windows in our room were very loose, so throughout the night it was banging against the window frame in the wind, therefore we didn't get the best nights sleep! 2) no hash brown or beans on the breakfast! the food we did get was delicious but I would have liked to have seen these items included instead of black pudding as I'm sure not many people eat it!
On the whole a nice stay and a good base if you are exploring the town.

It is a long time since I have stayed in a hotel that was not part of a chain and the atmosphere in the Angel is lovely and was a great change. There is just something about the Angel that makes it very different. Anything the staff do is done with a smile and everyone seems to go out of their way to be helpful.

The staff are clearly happy and that comes very much over in everything they do. I can only assume that the hotel is managed well and the staff like working there. We were served by many different members of staff over the 3 nights we were there and we were not left disappointed by any one of them.

We were part of a group of 36 and sitting down all at the same time for dinner no doubt caused a bit of a challenge for all the staff. It took a little bit longer to serve us all as a group but the meals were well worth waiting for.

The meals were very creative and we felt like we had just eaten food prepared by one of the leading gourmet chefs. Certainly if the chef at the Angel is not among the elite of chefs yet, chances are he or she will be. Breakfasts are equally as good.

I was staying with a friend in one of the rooms in the older part of the hotel and we loved it. Great views to the Abbey and Cathedral. The hotel is very central and Bury St Edmunds is a nice place with lots to do.

A big thank you from me to the staff and the managers. You have a good team and your hotel is a great place to stay. Long may it remain an independent hotel.

Room Tip: There are modern rooms but the older rooms do have character.

Now retired, but in past years I have used this hotel a lot for Business Meetings, Luncheons and Dinners. It was always reliable and good value for money. Recently we were invited to lunch by family and had an opportunity to see what modernisation has achieved. We were delighted with what we experienced. The central situation of the Hotel on the main Square opposite the Cathedral and Abbey Gardens, by the side of the Athenium Assembly Rooms, virtually guarantees its attractiveness. From the moment we entered the Hotel we found the welcome to be extraordinarily friendly. The modernised ambience is most comfortable and agreeable, whether for a fairly quick apéritif or an overnight stay. When it came to lunch there was a very attractive menu with a good selection of dishes and a wide-ranging wine list for service by the glass. The food was professionally cooked and presented and very tasty. The cheerful staff were attentive but unobtrusive and we had an excellent meal. The only downside was the wait for our meal, but when a restaurant is busy and food cooked to order it is only fair to acknowledge that a wait is inevitable. It did not spoil our experience. Another problem is of course parking. If one is lucky enough to find a space in the Square then it is essential to keep an eye on time. We used a long term car park for this reason, but it was quite a trek from the Hotel. Not good for the elderly or in inclement weather. Despite this, and all in all, however, our experience was delightful and we have no hesitation in recommending the Angel to otherts.

The lovely old hotel is slap opposite the Abbey Gateway on Angel Hill in the lovely market town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. It's a super destination for a special celebration. Mind you, even out shopping with a friend I'd certainly come here for a treat!

Our afternoon tea was excellent. Fresh sandwiches with egg and cress, smoked salmon, cheese and pickle and ham on white and brown bread, nicely thick cut and tasty. Cakes were gorgeous and there were plenty of them as well as two scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream apiece. We couldn't eat everything and had to ask for the leftover cakes to be packaged up to take home!

There was only one downside and this is probably being a bit picky. There were no choices of tea. We were given a huge pot of strong tea - at least it was leaf - and that was that. We'd have liked to have had the choice of others. Mind you, we didn't ask, so maybe bear that in mind for future visits.

And there will be future visits. Not particularly cheap at around £16 per head, but certainly not out the way for such a lovely venue. Mind you, if you are considering adding a glass of champers to it, then think again. Highly costly at £11 per glass! Ouch!

Having stayed at the Salthouse, which has always been excellent, as we were visiting houses in Suffolk we decided to stay for 4 days at the sister hotel, The Angel. Expectations were high, our deluxe room was up to standard. We were looking forward to our first evening meal on Saturday with a nice bottle of wine. The wine was excellent. Unfortunately, the food was not. 2 different starters and 2 different main courses were definitely not up to 2 Rosette standard. After complaining at the end of the meal, it took 3 days to sort out the final outcome and the lady undermanager was very helpful. We were offered a complementary lunch on Wednesday, but unfortunately we had to cancel. Luckily, we could eat at Prezzo and Carluccio's, which as usual were excellent.

We took advantage of the half priced suites and thought that the room had a trendy modern shabby chic feel too it. The bathroom with the cooper bath was well laid out with plenty of good toileteries. The bed was very comfortable with good quality bedding. Watching the world go by from the big window overlooking the square was enjoyable with a glass of wine. The breakfast was also very good with a vast selection of local produce. My only observation would be that dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about and the service was rather slow, having said that the waiting staff were all very professional. All in all a very good experience and we would definitely return.
