“A hotel full of history.”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

I have known the Angel hotel for many, many years, having been born in Bury St. Edmunds and in my teens and early 20s worked at the Angel Hotel. It is steeped in history and is said that Charles Dickens stayed there when it was a coaching in. There is( or was in my day) a stained glass window depicting Mr Pickwick. There are rooms named after Dickens, Louse XV and a vault/cellar/grillroom. Many famous stars have stayed there when they have been visiting the Theatre which is a beautiful theatre to go, own by Greene King brewery. This hotel has seen a lot of changes over the years but has always been run by local families. First the Gooding Family and then the Gough family. It overlooks the wonderful Abbey gardens, The Athenaeum,, the Cathedral and the Norman Tower. In the 60's stars, including Vincent Price, Ian Ogilvy stayed there whilst making the film "Witchfinder General" . This hotel is certainly worth a visit. and is central for all your sightseeing. As it is a listed building things like double glazing etc. are items over which they have no control.

I stayed at this hotel the night of the 11th March 2013. the hotel was really very comfortable. The rooms are clean, the beds are very comfortable. The restaurant offers good English menu for breakfast and dinner
The price is reasonable, good value for money
The only problem I found is that some of the corridors are very noisy, due to the wooden floor, and it is anavoidable to make some noise when you walk past some rooms.
Make sure you are not given one of those rooms.

We have been staying in this hotel for nearly a week now and dined here a few times you can't fault the food and the staff are very helpful and friendly, also it is located just a minute away from the town centre and restaurants, the only down side is that our room is not double glazed hence you hear some noise.

I spent a few weeks at the Angel on business and first of all I want to say how amazing the staff are. Nothing is too much trouble for them, they will even carry your bags to the car and defrost your car. The breakfast which is fully cooked to order is delicious, especially the smoked salmon and poached egg bagel. The first few times I stayed here I had really nice rooms but unfortunately the ones I had towards the end (eg 4.5, 105) were definitely not as nice as 11, 113 etc and you did feel a bit like you were staying in a different hotel. Having said that, it is still a great place to stay and the attention to detail (eg bottles of water and cafetiere in the room) is much appreciated. The downstairs bar is also pretty cool!

Opposite the Abbey Gardens in the centre of Bury St Edmund's, the Angel Hotel has a great location.
Staff are very friendly and helpful and car parking is assisted by staff using a private car park at the rear of the hotel.
The restaurant menu was not very inspiring but the meal we did have was very good.
Room good, ours was in the new part to the rear, and bed very comfortable.

Having booked through Secret Escapes, at a very resonable rate, we were quite happy with our one night stay. We have used this hotel many times over the years staying in one of the suites. In line with our discounted rate we were given an adequate room but it was a little tired, now in need of a lick of paint which would not go amiss in several other areas. The staff, as ever were outstanding, helpful with just the correct level of attention given. Breakfast was perfect. Bury St Edmunds is a gem of a town, well worth visiting.

We stayed at this hotel for one night and wished we booked for two - as soon as we arrived our luggage was taken into the reception and our car parked - we were taken to our room and I have to say the fastest check in we have ever experienced. The hotel is in the perfect location with the Abbey gardens across the road and all shops / pubs / restaurants a stones throw. We stayed in room 19 which was clean and very comfortable. The staff were fantastic and couldn't do enough for us. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be going back. We didn't eat in the restaurant so I can't comment on dinner but breakfast was good.
