Regency House Hotel
Reviewed April 4, 2013

Have stayed at the Regency several times over the last couple of years. The whole team are trying really hard to restore this nice little hotel to former glories. The location is superb, car parking facilities probably the best in Bury St Edmunds. Always a warm and friendly welcome even though some of the team are a bit shy. The cheery revamped restaurant looks a thousand times better than before. The hotel layout is eccentric, but the rooms have always been spotless. Quality of the breakfast very high. Agree with someone else's comment about elephants dancing on the ceiling if you are in a ground floor room. Well done the Regency management and staff, keep up the good work.

Room Tip: Rooms on the ground floor can suffer from elephants walking across the ceiling.

This hotel, albeit a bit dated inside and in need of some easily-achievable TLC, was perfectly located near to everything of interest in Bury and provided us with a wonderful suite of rooms - very large bedroom/lounge with 2 beds, sofa, etc; lobby; good-sized, clean, modern bathroom; and the bonus of a conservatory with doors out to the garden - all in complete privacy and at the far end of the hotel away from most guests, and casual patrons. A real treat.
The major down-side to be aware of is that if anyone is upstairs (in Room 22) you hear absolutely EVERY noise they make - with total clarity and intrusion - including their breathing/snoring when they sleep. You will only have a good night yourself if you sleep like a log! The owners would do well by their paying guests to put a false floor on top of the existing one in No.22 in order to prevent this.

Pleasant hotel well situated for the town centre and with ample parkingh. The room was clean and tidy with a modern en suite. Breakfast was lovely although the full english was a little small. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Overall a nice experience.

This has a great location, an ample car park and as it is set back from the road there is no traffic noise. The staff were all pleasant and on the second breakfast I enjoyed a most splendid scrambled egg on toast with bacon and mushrooms.

However, this falls into the 'faded and tired hotel' category.

This hotel was chosen for us because the confirmed advance booking at the (83 Whiting Street) B&B was disregarded - and this was offered as alternative. (Apparently the patrons of the two establishments are related.)

The double room was old with shabby carpet and wallpaper peeling in places - with very odd shower/toilet cupboard with no towel rail and a sliding door. I never got to see the single room but was told it was small.

The bed was on the small side - any bigger and it would not have fitted - but was comfortable enough.

There is a bar - which serves as the reception for part of the time - as the reception was never staffed when we visited it. That too is tired, and the restaurant area is odd.

This hotel is badly in need of a make-over to restore it to be a good hotel. It could almost be iconic.

We usually stay in another B&B in Bury, but for this trip needed to be in the town centre so chose this hotel. The location was excellent, right in the town centre, and there was parking at the hotel (something missing at our usual place).

The staff were extremely helpful - when we told them we were having a late night so would probably miss breakfast, they offered to bring it to our room at 9.30am! And I'm not talking toast and croissants - this is the only B&B I've stayed in which brought a full English hot, delicious breakfast to your room!

The room (14) was very small, however, barely room to walk around the two twin beds, but very clean. The communal areas were dated, but the room was newer although the old fashioned bedspreads let it down. We found the room quiet throughout the night.

We were delighted to see a newly refurbished bathroom, however, were disappointed to find extremely low water pressure, I could barely get the soap out of my hair with the dribble coming out of the shower.

Then when we went to the main bar area to check out, there was an intimidating group of men sitting outside drinking (at 10.30am) who we had to pass, and who made us feel very uncomfortable, but this could have been a one-off.

All in all, we would definitely stay here again, the location and parking are what makes it worthwhile, as well as the amazingly helpful staff.

Room Tip: I can only speak for Room 14, which was small, but quiet.

We spent 2 nights at this hotel after checking out of another that we disliked. Our room was excellent, very clean and well fitted. There is a decent sized car park. The breakfast was fine and served quickly. The owners and staff were friendly. We would use this hotel again.

Having found the Regency such a good base for the Bury Christmas markets last November we used it again to do the Bury-Clare long distance footpath on our anniversary weekend. We again had a room in the annex, but this one turned out to be more like a suite - a huge room with a king-sized bed and a settee you could sleep on, enough floor space for us both to do our cool down exercises without getting in each other's way; double doors opening out into a conservatory with table and chairs and further doors opening on to a walled lawn. We had a problem with a lack of hot water on the first night, but once reported the following morning this was immediately fixed and apologised for. The hotel also did sandwiches and a flask for our walk and kept eight bottles of water in their wine fridge overnight ready for the morning of the walk. Breakfasts were excellent, atmosphere relaxed and service friendly and attentive. And, of course, it is so central for all of Bury's amenities.

Room Tip: Our monster room was No 20. Recommended
