My wife and I recently spent three nights here. The accommodation is lovely - what you would expect from an Old English Inn - cosy room, comfortable bed, exposed beams, beautifully clean. We ate here for the duration of our stay and found the food varied from excellent to disappointing. We arrived on a Sunday evening and enjoyed a fabulous roast - superbly cooked meats with crackling and Yorkshire pudding, fresh crispy roast potatoes, and perfectly cooked vegetables. We selected gin and wine off the drinks menu, only to be told they had run out of our choices. The following evening we were told that some menu items were unavailable. The starters on the second night were at best disappointing - my wife chose the mushrooms on a toasted brioche bun. The brioche bun was soggy and mushy from the sauce, suggesting it had been waiting around in the kitchen for a good while. The three tiny homemade chicken gougeons in my starter were also soggy and accompanied by a tiny bit of wilted salad, presumably because it too had also been kept warm for some time rather than served fresh. Fortunately our main courses were a considerable improvement, although a piece of my wife's fish was overcooked. For our third night's dinner, we chose the Butcher's Board shared starter (two items off the shared seafood starter were unavailable). And very nice it was too, except that one item was missing (asparagus wrapped prosciutto). The waitress simply apologised and said the kitchen must have run out of asparagus too. My wife chose the chicken and smoked bacon salad, which again was very nice, except that there was no bacon! Again, an apology, but no explanation! My main course on the second and third nights were both very good - slow cooked rib of beef and shoulder of lamb - melt in your mouth stuff. And finally breakfasts! Some of the items on the breakfast menu never appeared - no yoghurts and no freshly prepared fresh fruit salad! And again, no explanation. While we enjoyed our stay very much, the overall standard of food did vary and the absence of so many items off both the food and drink menus were disappointing. We are huge fans of Old English Inns and have stayed in many of their properties, but the Olde Dog and Partridge wouldn't be at at the top of our list.

Great food. Partner loved the bagpipes. We just wanted to congratulate the management for their polite well mannered young lady Charlotte who, took the time to chat to us despite being busy giving our experience the wow factor. See you next year x

Came for an evening meal here and we were not disappointed. Food was well cooked, piping hot and plentyful. Very warm and welcoming atmosphere, nice table arrangement , there was plenty of room between tables even though it was very busy. The waiting staff were readily on hand even though the restaurant was full. Easy to find nice big carpark. Will definitely come again

Room tip: If the service in the restaurant is anything to go buy, don't think you can go wrong staying here

My partner and I recently came here for lunch, it was delightful. I explained that I'd prefer to sit somewhere quieter and the young lady showed us a table in the corner it was perfect, it was pleasingly warm as well, the food was delicious afterwards I was treated to a hot chocolate - hot it definitely was and very creamy. Will definitely visit again. What is brilliant is they are dog friendly and they even have a doggy dinner menu too.

Stayed in this lovely 16th Century hotel for 1 night to celebrate a birthday. Large car park up behind the hotel led to a charming bar area. The room was delightful with an exposed stone wall, appropriate furniture, comfortable bed and was warm and welcoming. The bathroom did not match up! Greene King have refused to fund a refurbishment although the managers have been asking for years. Come on chaps! Don't let these old tired facilities let this gem down! We are dinner here which was good value, we'll cooked and served by young professional staff who were friendly and helpful. The dining areas are warm but that's what comes of low ceilings and central heating!! Breakfast was cooked to order and set us up for the day. We will visit this historic town again to sample the church, Castle and range of coffee shops. I would recommend the Dog and Partridge for a romantic night away.
