“Moderate sandwich, good pint”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2013

Called in for a bite of lunch, and to be honest were disappointed with what can only be described as a moderate sandwich. Sandwiches come with some salad leaves (un-dressed) and a few home made (moderately but not piping hot) chips. The white bread was bloomer, pretty small slices and not particularly fresh. My roast beef was well done and somewhat dry, whilst the smoked salmon with cream cheese was fine. Beer was in excellent condition. A shame really - just a little more effort would have made quite a difference as it's a lovely spot. There's a huge car park (never a problem to park), lots of seating to the front, and a sheltered inner courtyard which really is very attractive.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on Trip Advisor regarding your recent visit to the Dog and Doublet.

I am sorry that you did not enjoy your sandwich on your visit. This is not our usual standard and I have made our Chef and Manager aware of your comments.

I am glad that you found our beer to be of excellent quality though and hope this encourages you to make a return visit.

“Pie and Pint night - Tuesdays”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2013

We went on Valentine's Day, conscious of havibg started a diet a week ago. Pleasantly surprised to find that on Tuesdays a popular 'Pie and Pint' offered a good variety of quality choices - both of pies and ales. We opted for the fish pie with dill mash and chose vegetables rather than chips as a sop to conscience.Excellent prompt friendly service produced the main courses in good time and when finished we were offered extra vegetables if required. Finished with a meringue based winter berrry mess - again well presented and very tasty. Decore was very appealling to us - big warm room, plenty of space, interesting range of historic agricultural photos on the walls and a similar theme scrolled through a wall screen. We'll return for the steak night when the dieting has ended - probabaly in summer - to enjoy the setting and the outside tables looking over the countryside. Well worth a visit just to drink, or for a range of meals from fast to formal dining.

“Mediocre”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2013

Possibly worth 2.5 stars but not three.
Bloody Mary with no Worcester sauce (£5.95!) and 2 tonics.
Nibbles of olives and bread with balsamic dip (not vinegar and oil appeared to be vinegar only)
Glass Pinot Grigiot (room temperature) and glass Pinot Noir.
Starters Goats Cheese ( 4 small balls cheese in bright yellow crumb like scotch egg - looked mass produced - with beetroot slurry) served on a piece of slate (how passe is that) and smoked mackerel.
Mains Goats Cheese Wellington (soggy pastry) and pepper, lentil, sweet potato curry (very bland)
Sides chips (21 for £3) and mixed salad (listed as mixed leaf). The Wellington came with an unannounced bowl of undercooked roasted root veg.
Dessert of lemon tarts (more mass production?) No dessert wine available.

Service was friendly and efficient.
Total bill £73

Overall not expensive typical pub food but nothing to make me want to return..
If you are looking for this sort of meal go to the Wolseley Arms instead.

“Very high quality meal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

We enjoyed a very nice meal. The food was delicious and although the staff were friendly and attentive, the meal appear to take a long time. This can be a challenge when you have children in your party. Although my wife chose to have soup as a main course, she was charged the full price on the Sunday lunch menu, this made the meal quite pricey.
