WE chanced upon Goodfellows while on a cycling trip. We eat there two days running for dinner and both nights had the tasting menu. they completely changed the way the fish was cooked on the second night just for us. Really brilliant, michelin 1 star standard cuisines, great service and reasonable price given the high quality. Try it and you will enjoy it. we will make a trip back again just to eat there

I return again and again with friends, colleagues and those who need to be entertained in a very special way. The welcome is always personal and very friendly; service is attentive and comfortable providing a relaxed but special ambience. The food always very special; beautifully prepared and cooked, artistically presented and delicious to consume. It is a gem in the south west.

We have been eating there most Fridays for over three years. The price is very reasonable at £19.50 for three courses or £16.50 for two courses or there are alternatives at different prices. The food is always excellent and is presented very well with plenty of time between the courses. The bread which is served after the order is taken, is usually a choice of four or five from white, wholemeal, focaccia, rye and spelt and is also excellent. The wine choices are also very good and the house white is a Chenin Blanc from South Africa. There are also good choices in the Patisserie which is connected and served by the same kitchen in the Restaurant.

I have dined at Goodfellows many times when in Wells; my wife and I (and our friends in Wells) keep going back because it is outstanding in every way. I am puzzled by any of the reviews that give Goodfellows anything less than top marks. The waiting staff couldn't be more helpful (they're experts and enthusiasts for the food and the wine that they serve); and we've always found them to be friendly and welcoming. The food is outstanding - comparing with the very best in London and, as such, it's one of our favourite places to eat in the UK (and we're very choosy!).

We've also been to the Sadler Street Cafe part of the restaurant is great value for money (£10 at lunch for a main course, glass of wine and one of their delicious puddings; similar deal in the evening) and the main restaurant is also terrific value for money with its set price menus as well as the main menu.

My advice would be to try it yourself - then you'll see what I mean and want to stay in Wells on a regular basis, as we do - especially as it's also got one of the most stunning cathedrals in the world, twice weekly markets and is in the middle of beautiful Somerset.

My husband and I were in Wells for the morning and visited Goodfellows for lunch recently. We ordered the plate of English cheeses with home made organic spelt bread and walnut bread.

The waiter showed us to a table and gave us a menu. He did not even give us time to sit down before getting his pen and pad ready to take the order for food. We paused to look at the menu for a minute or so and he "tutted" and said he would come back if we couldn't make our minds up.

On arrival to our table, I couldn't believe how thin the bread was - in fact we couldn't understand how they managed to cut it that thin - it would not have been possible with even the best of bread knives. The only thing I can imagine they used was a supermarket ham slicer. The 4 portions of cheese were also extremely thin and very small in size. There wasn't even a portion of Cheddar cheese which suprised us no end as we are in the middle of the West Country - arguably one of the best Cheddar producing counties in the country.

With a soft drink each, the total for this minute portion of food was £18. We both felt thoroughly ripped off and paid the bill without even leaving a tip (this is the first time we have ever done this, despite being very keen foodies and restaurant visitors).
