“Do not be fooled by the great location of this place!”
Reviewed December 17, 2013 via mobile

Rude staff (including the person who responded to my complaint by email),
over priced drinks (£4.50 for a small glass of reheated, ready made mulled wine, no fruit or spices added) and AWFUL food (raw fries and over cooked burger ...definitely not award winning).
Worth finding somewhere else instead!

Inaccurate review. You complained, not while here when we could have addressed your issues, but after the event saying you would give us an opportunity to respond before posting a review online.
Mulled wine was freshly prepared. Food certainly neither awful, raw or overcooked.

“Beautifully cooked”
Reviewed December 9, 2013

My partner had a sirloin steak which was perfectly cooked. I had beef cooked in red wine and onions with succulent red cabbage. Service was great, very friendly atmosphere

“Good but not outstanding”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

Wells has been well supplied with historic pubs and The Crown is one of them.It is divided into a large number of small spaces some with fires and a courtyard which, on a prevous visit was a pleasant place for a coffee. This time we had Sunday lunch in the Penn Bar, so named because William Penn preached to a crowd from a balcony of the hotel after which he was arrested! The meat was substantial and locally sourced and most of the vegetables seasonal (including savoy and red cabbage) and appropriately cooked. As a previous poster has pointed out the potato was rather odd and I assume that the mange-tous where for colour. The service was a bit off-hand. It was quite busy with a mixture of dining visitors and locals simply having a drink. I imagine that it gets very busy in Summer as it is the nearest pub to the Cathedral. It was OK but I would probably try somewhere else to eat on any future visit to Wells.

“Great Stay”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

This is the second time that my husband and I have visited Wells with its beautiful cathedral and surroundings. We were fortunate enough to stay at The Crown at Wells right in the centre and will certainly be coming back soon for another stay. We were visiting the antique fair at Shepton Mallet and staying in the middle of Wells was very peaceful. The breakfast was superb and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The wifi wasn't brilliant but this would be my only criticism. The beds were really comfy and I was impressed with the arcania apothecary products in the bathroom. Thank you to you all.
