“Nice, clean and friendly”

We stayed here to watch the Tour of Britain cycle race. The location is perfect and from the moment we arrived the staff were very attentive and informative. We had a lovely room, nicely furnished with lots of light. The bar was very friendly in the evening with excellent entertainment. Morning breakfast was nicely done and set us up for the day ahead. Thank you to Natalie and the team for making us both very welcome. If we are in Wells again we would definitely stay at The Sherston Inn.

We were staying at the Wookey Hole Hotel but having read the disappointing reviews regarding the restaurant there we decided to venture into Wells to find dinner for the four of us.

We didn't know the area at all so just stopped at the first place that looked ok. I waited in the car with the children whilst my husband went for a recce and a peer through the window. The restaurant side of the bar looked very smart so we decided to go for it.

The bar was busy with only one person serving but she was more than happy for us to bring the children in and we settled down in the window table. This was our first mistake as it was right next to the door separating the bar from the restaurant. Unfortunately around 30 blokes arrived (bit scary seeing them walk down the road) and they seemed to all take it in turns to go out for a cigarette. The outdoor smoking section was only accessible through the restaurant so we had to put up with swearing and blokey behaviour every 5 minutes.

The food arrived - the homemade burger was let down by a longlife seeded roll but the chips were hot although not very many of them. We had to stop off at a local Tesco for supplies to take back to the room to fill us up.

I think the pub should be rebranded into a local boozer not suitable for dining and then it will do what it is meant to do rather than advertise outside that they welcome families and have an extensive menu.

If you want a pint of local ale and a bag of crisps with your mates then it's for you - if you want a nice family meal then maybe look elsewhere.

In response to the review from August 20th, I'm sorry that you're meal was spoilt by men wandering through the restaurant. The bar and restaurant were the other way around until very recently and I'm afraid it's probably going to take a little while for some of our regulars to break the habit of walking through what used to be the bar.

Also I will make every effort to find out why your side dishes were, as you mentioned, small. This is very unusual as we strive to offer delicious, fresh and homecooked food but little portions are certainly not our style we do offer children's portions but I'm assuming from your comment that this was not the case?

Very warm welcome, at the Sherston. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were newly refurbished. They are very spacious and clean. The bathrooms were a good size , with everything you need. The food in the restaurant was superb, with a combination of traditional pub fare, and gourmet specials. The skate was excellent. Compliments to the chef. Highly recomended

We booked the Sherston Inn having read the only review posted on TripAdvisor which was very positive. We were also governed by the availability of local hotels as we were booking late. The hotel looked lovely from the outside however our problems started immediately we arrived. Inspite of informing them that we would arrive at midday our room was not ready to occupy at that time. We were also allocated the family room as an alternative to the double we had booked which had been given to someone else. We had lunch at the hotel which was very nice and then agreed to return at 4pm to occupy the room. At this time however there were still no towels or tea and coffee making facilities made available in the room. The room itself was poorly furnished and badly decorated. The carpet was dirty, pictures were hung in strange places to camouflage holes in the wall and the main door looked like the lock had been forced recently. The 'exclusive' bathroom was also 'exclusive' to other guests and the toilet lock was inoperative. On going out for the evening our room key was exchanged for another which subsequently turned out not to work on our return although by now our towels and 'continental' breakfast had finally materialised. The breakfast itself was disappointing, the digital TV reception was intermitent and the room was noisy owning to the hotels location on the corner of a busy road junction. We only ever saw one member of staff at any one time during the entire stay. The service, although very friendly, can only be described as unprofessional. As transit accommodation it may fit the bill but not if you are after a comfortable, stylish experience.

The Sherston Inn has actually changed ownership a couple of times since these 2007 reviews! However most crucially, I feel, is this year when the Bed & Breakfast has just been completely renovated and refurbished along with the entire pub & restaurant. We've already had a few guests stay in the first 2 weeks it's been open and we're looking forward to getting some new reviews!

The best thing about Wells isn't the cathedral (dull), isn't the Bishops Palace (overpriced), or the market (poncey), but is the Sherston Inn. I have never been to a pub/ restaurant/ hotel that is as down to earth and welcoming as this place.....and the food was fantastic. I've been travelling round England for a while now and this is without doubt the best hospitality I have encountered. We drank, ate, drank and slept...fantastic
