do not stay here if you

1. have a car and want helpful easy clear directions to a car park.

2. the smell of tamato, onion and Garlic Ragu makes you feel ill after 24 hours+.

stayed here had a car the reception was not overly versed on where you should park for the best.

the bathroom in our room stank of fermenting italian sauces from down stairs, i assume as the kitchen was directly below? but after the second day this started to actualy make us feel sick!!!!!!!!

your breakfast is over the road and if you order a paper DO NOT WAIT IN BED TO READ IT. you have to get up and go over to the sister hotel to retrive it!!!!!!!!!!!!

the oitalian restaurant however downstairs was realy good, but after eating there on the first night then having to smell the food for 2 days it knocked you sick really i am affraid.

1. Strategically placed cushions covered up dirt stains on the bedding
2. Bedding was very old and uncomfortable.
3. Had to wait all day for a bulb to be put in the main light in our room.
4. Why do you have to go to another hotel for breakfast (which was booked and paid for) when there is a restaurant downstairs??
5. The breakfast was cold, had run out of most things and sausage tasted funny!
6. Room was stuffy and windows could not be opened properly. One fell down and bruised my hand!!!
7. En suite bathroom was from the 1960's- very dated.
8. Provided with a kettle, but where are you meant to plug it in???
9. Very overpriced!! Staff not particularly helpful.
10. Nice view if the Cathedral though.

I booked this hotel at short notice and got a relatively cheap deal. However, although the hotel boasts a good location, overlooking the cathedral, we had a very small room at the front of the hotel. It was on the main road, so terribly noisy, it was also ridiculously hot in the room even though the heating was not on. We couldn't open the window as the noise from the road was too much with the market setting up very early. The plumbing in the hotel was also excessively noisy, and you could hear whenever anyone flushed the toilet, or took a shower!.

I also did not like the decor in the room, it was terribly dated, and could have done with better lighting and decoration. The renovation from a very grand building was not very sympathetically done, with dingy corridors being squeezed into what clearly used to be a grand room.

The only good thing about the hotel was a comfy bed (although I couldn't get any sleep because of the noise and heat) and the breakfast was very good. Other than that it was pretty terrible.

We had a one night stopover at this hotel on our tandem cycle tour John O Groats to Lands End. It was the first place we came across when we arrived in the city centre late afternoon, and on enquiry they had a double room available and offered us a discounted price which we decided to accept. The room was not large but had a lovely deep window seat and an incredible carved oak four poster bed (and a good modern shower room). The proprietor and staff were helpful and friendly, and allowed us to store the tandem overnight in the garage of the sister hotel opposite (The White Hart) which is also where breakfast is served.
I think the hotel was good value for the area at the discounted price. The hotel is very old with sloping floors, steep staircases and architectural oddities such as the high level stained glass window in the downstairs Ladies - this is its essential charm so don't expect squeaky clean plastic and high polished glass. The only problem for us was that we weren't warned the bed was well under 6ft in length - a bit hard on our well-worked leg muscles! Because of this I don't think I can review the room above "average" though it was anything but that!

The hotel was fantastic - loved everything about it - the stone staircase to the rooms upstairs and the fire escape!! We booked 8 of the 9 rooms for a family birthday party. When booking the hotel the receptionist was very helpful. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. The proprietor and staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful and made the weekend. We ate in the Rugantino Restaurant and in the White Hart - both very enjoyable meals. Even the grandchildren said they would like to go back there. I think everyone there would like to go back sometime in the future.

My wife and i checked in at 2pm on a rainy ,damp and cold ( for us ) day. Upon enquiring about the possibility of room heat - the response was - " it isn't cold, and the central heating is turned off " , totally ignoring our reality. After travelling all day and also feeling cold we wanted a hot shower before going out to dinner , at 4pm there was no hot water, response - " maybe its all used up , let the water run for awhile " ( we tried that ) . As we were meeting friends for dinner at 7pm we requested help from the manager , he came to the room and tried at 6pm , no luck, finally at 6.45 we had hot water just as we were leaving for dinner, so it was too late . No apology or discount .

Stayed for 2 nights here in Room 8. This room is located right in the attic of the hotel and is accessed by an ancient (and no doubt original) stone spiral staircase. Although this staircase is quaint, it's also extremely precarious with worn annd slippery stones and nothing to hold onto when you get to the upper area. Certainly wouldn't recommend this room to elderly people.

Room 8 is small and cramped with a tiny toilet & shower. It has a plastic 'skylight' that can be lifted for a spectacular view of the west face of the cathedral.

The room was available for £70 per night as a Spring special. This is about the right price although the regular rate is £91 which is far too much for a room of this size & quality.

On the plus side the hotel is perfectly located (although you will have to park a short distance away in town), the breakfasts are pretty good and tthe staff are very friendly.
