Ancient Gate House Hotel

Stayed here before and love the position of the hotel opposite Wells Cathedral. Its a lovely looking old Inn but downstairs is now an Italian Restaurant and most of the character has been knocked out of it. You can buy a drink here and sit in a small room or outside overlooking the cathedral. Our room looked lovely but it was small, looked historic and had a wonderful four poster bed. Room included tea/coffee biscuits, bottle of water and toiletries. Breakfast was across the road in the sister pub the White Hart, lovely help yourself hot breakfast with friendly staff. We paid £110 which I think was worth the money, I just wish the room had been bigger.

Thank you for your comments, we're so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Unfortunately the rooms cannot be made larger, as, because you can appreciate, it was built in 1451 and is therefore listed. We think the rooms add to the character of the building and to alter them would take away some of its charm and uniqueness.

Having booked on internet at 2pm I arrived at 6pm after a great deal of trouble finding the place. Need to warn that sat nav post code does not find it. Was told that my room had been given to someone else. Somewhat incompetent man on desk who did not apologise and who chewed gum throughout asked me to wait for his colleague to arrive. No drink offered. Waited 20 mins at which point more competent colleague took to me to see the rooms that were left and i chose the twin. He at least apologised and brought me a glass of wine when I asked. Room pretty if hot, bathroom door closed with no heating so freezing. Previous occupants very dirty towels hanging behind the door. Came down to dinner and had to wait a while but service was fine although desk man who was now a waiter was still chewing gum. Dinner average but the restaurant was full so competition presumably not too hot.
This could be really good but they need better management. Setting is amazing.

Room Tip: i suggest you call to make sure you even have one!

No parking, no-one to help with taking bags to room (steep narrow stairs), small room, dirty room window, en-suite in need of re decoration (tatty and rusting by shower, vinyl flooring lifting), new mattress needed to complete the four poster, dinner was fine although the restaurant felt bare and unwelcoming, breakfast was served across the road in the sister hotel, a service charge was added to our bill without us being notified, we stayed on a dinner bed and breakfast rate and weren't told of the sub charges for certain items on the menu, we wanted to check out straight after breakfast as we had a long drive home but had to hang around until 11am as the reception was closed. Fantastic location being in the middle of the city, lovely sitting room with a cathedral view, this hotel has masses of potential and could be so much more!

We booked the hotel over the phone as we wanted to have an extra bed in the room for our teenage daughter. When we arrived (after several trips around the one-way system of Wells) we had been given an extra room next to ours at no additional cost as it was off-season which was very thoughtful. We were very pleased with the standard of the rooms for a two star hotel and thoroughly enjoyed the dinner, bed and breakfast tariff we had booked as it enabled us to have a lovely meal in the Italian restaurant downstairs in the evening. Service at all times was excellent and very friendly, including at breakfast over in the White Hart Hotel.

We spent a delightful night in this truly ancient hotel which is remarkable for the view from Room 3 over the Cathedral Close. The west front of the cathedral to be seen over the foot of the bed! Perhaps there are other rooms with this view, I don't know. The room tastefully furnished, the bed was as comfortable an any unknown bed can be, there was a small but well appointed bathroom (and loo with a view) with plenty of hot water. The lighting (room and bedside) is not as good as I would like but then I need to read in bed. The staircases and passages are precipitous and some are probably utterly original. The fire exit plan is interesting and, I have no doubt, effective. The restaurant on the ground floor serves delicious Italian dishes - quote from my husband: 'they appear to know what to do with food'. If you want draught beer it comes from across the road.
Since it is the Quiet Season, breakfast was across the road in the White Hart - a sister hotel - as was parking.
So enjoyable that we have reserved the room for our wedding anniversary - next weekend
Prtobably hell in summer, but that would be the case in any tourist destination like Wells.

Room Tip: They have four poster beds, probably in the larger rooms looking on to the street, but ask for the v...
