“Very poor”
Reviewed July 18, 2012

We went for a family meal on the evening of the 17th of July. We have been here with my parents before and have had very good service and food. This was a very disappointing evening . There were 9 of us and we had to wait over 45 minutes for our starters and when they arrived they were not value for money. The smoked salmon portion was tiny enough for one fork full, as was the portion of crispy duck on the starter menu. The mains arrived a little quicker but my brothers cod in batter was still cold in the middle. This was obviously a frozen piece of fish not fresh cooked in home made batter which for the price of £9.50 is not cheap, but would be worth it if homemade. So my brother had to wait while a fresh meal was brought, and by the time this had arrived the rest of us had finished our meals. When the bill arrived the fish had been removed as had the two bottles of wine. A nice gesture but would it have not been better to come over and offer an apology as well as removing the wine and the fish dish. Very poor Antons Bistro.

Thank you for your Trip Advisor review. We are sorry that when you dined with us, it was not as it should be. We were ridiculously busy that day. We are not offering that by way of excuse.

As you say, the fish was taken off the bill and is now off Anton's menu.

We can only assure you that your experience is far from the norm at Anton's Bistrot.

My husband and I had a wonderful 3 course meal here whilst staying at the nearby Swan hotel. It is set in the heart of Wells and if you request a window seat you have a beautiful view of the wishing fountain. The service was warm and friendly, they were very helpful when we asked about various dishes and there is water already on the table. I had a glass of the Pinot grigot which was lovely and chilled, my husband enjoyed the red. I had the sweet potato soup which was just the right amount and v fresh. The pie of the day was steak and this is where I could only find fault with the restaurant as not enough meat in it. The accompanying veg was cooked perfectly but there was not enough of it. My husband had the pork belly which he thoroughly enjoyed but again not enough of it although the homemade crackling was to die for. For dessert I had the brownie and is definitely in my top 3, my husband had the cheese plate but not enough cheese for him, too thinly cut but you do get a big bunch of grapes to help clense your pallet. The food is served quickly here and your not left waiting around. We expected to pay around £70 but the bill only came to £50 for 3 courses each and wine, a bargain! Would come again here.

Stayed for one night. Great location overlooking the market square (though if you're bothered by early morning noise avoid rooms at front on marketday). All the rooms look a little tired and in need of udating. Food was very good, though again, the restaurant looked more like a cafe and needed some updating (also little details like 3 picture lights and one ceiling light not working tell their own story). Neither of us think it warrants its 4 star rating - 3 would be more accurate in our view.

Thank you for your Trip Advisor review.
We're pleased you enjoyed your stay with us overall. To address your concerns:

We supply complimentary earplugs for all guests to reduce any disturbance from outside. Our location determines that there will be some noise from the market.

We are furnished in-keeping with The Crown's 15th century character. Did you see all our rooms?

The restaurant is a converted stable block with stone walls and oak flooring and we do not agree with your opinion that it resembles a cafe. We are sorry that a couple of the lights were not working and can assure you the bulbs have now been replaced.

Our four star rating is based on us being an inn, not an hotel and is graded by both the AA and English Tourism Council. We are sorry you do not concur with their grading.

We continually lavish attention on The Crown. Maintaining such an old building is ongoing but we do our best to keep on top of it and keep it as fresh as possible without detriment to the wonderful character.

Found the hotel good, had age to it. We had a four poster bed in our room. The room was clean and tidy.. The food in hotel was average pub, but good. The service was good apart from waiter calling us "Guys" all the tims. Car parking a bit awkward. Market on a Tuesday and Saturday may make hotel noisy. Overall a nice stay.

Room Tip: No front rooms on Monday and Friday night because of market. They do supply ear plugs

Thank you for your review, we are pleased you enjoyed your stay. Apologies for being referred to as 'guys', we have spoken with ours!
We are also trying, again, to address the market issues but are pleased it was not a major problem for you. Do come again.

We had a wonderful stay the The Crown at Wells, and would recommend it to any visitors to the Wells area. It is located in the center of the small town, directly next to the beautiful cathedral. We stayed in Room #1, which had a large 4-poster bed, and a bathroom with an awesome mutliple-head shower. The room was beautiful, with a couch/sitting area, 4-poster bed, large armoire, and sitting table/desk. Windows overlooked the small interior courtyard and outdoor area of the pub and small (tiny) carpark. Noise was not a problem. The entry to the room is very low (perhaps 4.5 feet, but once inside, the ceilings are quite high. Truly a magnificent room -- the best we encountered on our entire trip. The included cooked breakfast was spectacular and delicious, and offered a number of variations (including vegetarian options). A very well provisioned cereal, fruits, juices and toast bar complemented the breakfast. We also ate dinner at Anton's Bistrot and had a delicious meal, served nicely by the staff, and found it to be an excellent value and to be recommended. Parking in their small car park was included (space available). There is a full-sized supermarket (Co-Op) located just 150m away, an excellent resource for travellers.

This is a highly recommended place for visitors to Wells and the surrounding area.

Room Tip: If you wish more than just the standard room, simply call and speak to them about their rooms -- the...

I ate at the pub here with some friends. Service was OK apart from the language problem with the barmaid and the fact that the card machine attempted to charge you for a gratuity before you had actually had the meal.

We were told we could not have any garlic mayo because the kitchen staff "were busy and a bit angry" although we did get some with the meal.

The food itself was fine, standard pub fayre, well cooked but nothing to write home about.

Great atmosphere though and the staff were very friendly.

We stayed here for one night in March. The room was comfortable with a large bathroom. Unfortunately, as the weather was wonderfully warm, the room was hot and it was impossible for us to sleep until late, since with the windows closed it was too hot and since outside, a bunch of young people were talking and laughing very loudly. Otherwise, the hotel is located in the very centre of the old city, just accross the entrance of bishop's palace and really not far from the breathtaking Well's cathedral (don't miss the scissors arches ! It looks like Gaudi but from the XIIIth or XIVth century !). We ate a rather good diner at Anton's with a pretty good Australian wine.Well to sum up : not a good night but a good experience.
