“Grudging service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2011

Went to this hotel with some friends and their children for late lunch/cream tea. Asked if sandwiches available ( at 3pm) and a not v. friendly waitress went to see if they 'had any bread'. They did so we ordered a cheese and chutney sandwich and a roast beef sandwich for about £7 each. A complete rip-off. Grated cheese on one slice of bread, lots of beef but so cold as straight from fridge and tasted tough, like it was a few days old. We reported back to our waitress, initially no reaction , then I asked for a refund whch she grudgingly gave, no aplogies and subsequent rude service as our table was cleared. Almost spolied what had been a very pleasant afternoon.

Perhaps we were unlucky in our room but it began with a pair of socks from the previous occupant lurking under the chair and one bedside light not working - even after it was reported on day one of a two day stay.

The decor was dated and unattractive and the bathroom very 50-ish. Ditto the furniture which was old - not antique, just old. The bar and dining room were absolutely fine and clearly updated but the sitting area/lounge had furniture so stained and old that I chatted to the Operations Manager about it. He said it was being changed in June.

It was all very disappointing although the location was excellent.

Although a friend and I had been impressed by the positive reviews on TripAdvisor and booked long in advance, the Swan went well beyond our high expectations. This renovated 15th-century coaching inn is packed with all the charming details that make many of us fall in love with English life--lots of wood paneling, roaring fires in the lounge, and the warmest of welcomes from the staff. They just could not do enough for us and always with a pleasant smile.

If someone wants a modern luxury hotel, this is not for you. There is no lift and the last two steps are tall ones (but it's only two levels and staff will, of course, carry your luggage). Some of the rooms are small and the bathrooms may be odd in shape, having been carved out of the bedroom space. The top frame of our sitting area window and the line of the ceiling above seemed to have no relationship to each other--but, hey, this is part of the charm. If you are NOT charmed by such eccentricities, then go to a large hotel chain with rooms that all look alike.

The location is extraordinary--facing the stunning west front of Wells Cathedral. Sitting in the lounge or the bar, you can enjoy a drink and watch the cathedral front change in the shifting light. Or in summer you can sit in the terrace directly across the street (part of the hotel property) and enjoy refreshment almost on the cathedral grounds. The Swan is only a few steps away from the Market Square, the Bishop's Palace, many good restaurants, and the town center with its grocery stores, book stores, etc.

While we can also praise the hotel's food, the major quality that we keep remembering is the cordial warm attention of the staff. Everyone--from the bartender to the dining room staff to the receptionists--behaved as if the patrons were old friends returning home for a visit. We indeed loved our visit to the Swan and we can hardly wait to go back!

Fantastic Hotel, lots of charm and history. Public spaces 1A, Rooms would need a litle renovation if you prefer clean, crisp hotel rooms. sleep quality was good though. Fantastic food. Also try the Goodfellows restaurant next door!

We visited the Swan as a group for a Christmas Lunch and a number of us stopped overnight. From the minute we entered the hotel everything lived up to our best expectations. The hotel was beautifully decorated to get us in the festive spirit, and hot coffee and chocolate at very reasonable prices warmed us up. Everyone enjoyed their individual menu choice at the Christmas lunch, with quick and pleasant service from the staff. We explored the lovely historic city of Wells in the afternoon, visiting the cathedral in the early evening. Later in the evening we were able relax in front of the blazing log fire and chat over drinks. The spacious rooms were tastefully decorated with comfortable beds and lovely bathrooms. The breakfast menu was varied and full and again the service was attentive and helpful.

The location of the Swan, across the green from the ancient cathedral, is a great advantage. Overall the pleasure of staying at the Swan was the excellent staff, the pleasant ambience, understated but good decoration and a well run restaurant with good food.

I was vacationing in England for 10 day, and our taxi driver in Bath suggested going to see the town of Wells. So we went with no hotel arangments just hoping to find a place to stay. Walked into Swan Hotel to see if they had any vacancies, and they did. Loved the place so much we stayed for two nights... I wish it were more! The stay was very very nice (even to american travelers that had no reservation). The lady at the front desk made a hand drawn map to help around. The room was very nice and clean! I will hopefully go back again, as it was my favorite among the places we stayed in england. Also Wells was my favorite town!

We stayed here whilst on our way to visit friend. Just the one night so could not sample the restaurant as it was fully booked. However, the service for afternoon tea in the lounge and the bar in the evening was great. We had room 41 on the second floor, no lift so not suitable if you have mobility problems. However, the view made up for the climb! Obviously this room has recently been redecorated - absolutely beautiful decor with windows looking out directly to the Cathedral. Very comfortable bed. Bathroom small but perfectly adequate - the shower was fine. Breakfast was good -mainly buffet but all freshly cooked and appetising. Reception were very accommodating as we arrived early - no problems booking in ahead of time. We will return to spend more time - and definitely book room 41!
