“You couldn't make it up”

Awful. Went for a "roast" which to us means the food will be roasted. It arrived delivered in around 4 minutes, my wife Mrs Jingles was sure she heard a ping. Nothing was roasted. The beef was boiled, the veg, broccoli (on the turn) and carrots were not cooked, but more like dipped briefly in boiling water. In fact tepid more like as they arrived lukewarm. The Yorkshire pudding was not one one aunt Bessie's but more like one from the tesco value range.
Then the beef, the beef had been more boiled than the veg. It was therefore rubbery and I decided I would rather eat the tongue from the left foot of my five year old dr marten's boot. Mrs jingles had to eat in her coat as the pub was cold. The only real interesting thing there was the couple who wheeled their dog in in one of those ponsey three wheeled prams that toffs wheel Hugo or Imogen about in.
Mind you when the Classic Italian waiter came over and mumbled some thing unrecognisable we both replied "yes lovely". The nicest thing about this place is the nice door on the way out.

Mr Jingles.

I am sorry you found your visit unsatisfactory, I have just taken over as general manager at the city arms.
I can assure you that our roasts are now at a high standard, the Yorkshire puddings are made on site and the veg is cooked to order to it isn't soft and watery. The meats are cooked in their juices to keep it soft and tender, also full of flavour so it should eliminate the "leather feel" as you described.

It is a shame you didn't let anybody know you were not happy when the check back was done by our French waiter. Obviously we could have changed the meals for you or taken it off your bill instead of responding to a review on a public site.

I would like to discuss this further and hopefully you will return to the city arms. Could you please contact me on 01749 673916

“never again”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2013

Could list more than 20 areas of critcal comment here, most of them the result of poor housekeeping management. The money spent on the vaunted new bathrooms would have been better going on improved cleaning and basic maintainance. Access to the resident's rooms was particulalry poor, presenting like a scruffy backyard, with cigarette butts and a tatty mat. There was oil on the floor inside, which is also the access to the kitchen. The exterior lighting was poor, the handrail on the outside stair was inadequate and there were grip treads missing. A slippery mat was actually pointed out to us as being slippery!! This is the tip of the iceberg! The pity is this could all be so easily fixed.
Breakfast was in a draughty corner of the bar with delivery men back and forth - a sheer lack of common sense. Be warned, the website details, meal times etc, do not always co-incide with reality.
£45 had been added to our bill, for absolutely no reason. The gentleman with little English language could not work the on-line payment terminal and in the end we paid in cash. We were told the landlady was in bed. We had not been greeted on our arrival and there were no
courteous Goodbyes when we left.
Belatedly realised this a SELF ASSESSED 4 Star. This means it has not been seen by the AA or similar body.

“Morning after the night before”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2013

went for breakfast.

First challenge was ordering off the menu, as the bar man had limited english. Food came but coffee was not acceptable. Asked for this to be sorted (more language problems), so landlady took over. She explained what languages bar man had, and didn't see absence of english as an issue. Silly me.

Were told that previous night activities in pub had gone on till 3am with annual carnival.

Food was average.
Came to pay, explained the breakast felt like morning after the night before. That was understood. charged full whack.

Suggest you try Broad Street or Sadler Street, we will.

Thankyou for taking the time to review your visit to the City Arms. I am sorry you didn't enjoy your stay.

I have just taken over as general manager of the City arms and have taken your comment on board.

I have employed new breakfast staff (chef and waitress) so communication will not be an issue. As you are aware, we are a city centre pub with rooms, we are not a hotel. Noise will happen and on carnival weekend it's obvious that people will be out and about til early hours of the morning and unfortunately is out of our control.

If you would like to discuss this further then please contact me on 01749 673916

“Only average”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2013

Had a lunch here which was acceptable, but the general standard of service can only be described as average. It felt like we were in a factory cafeteria. The food was quite good so there is potential for some big steps forward.

“Needs a good clean.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2013

Popped in for a drink and there was a terrible smell of sewage, i know the building is old but it's not nice to smell, i am glad we only had one drink and not a meal especially when i entered the lady's toilets, they were dirty, they needed a good clean, the toilet its self was horrible to use i could not wait to get out of there and wash my hands elsewhere. Really they should check the toilets every hour or so to make sure they are CLEAN and smell PLEASANT.
