Owner description: Home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for 800 years this stunning medieval palace is open for all to enjoy. Surrounded by a breathtaking moat with resident Mute swans, you can cross the Drawbridge to experience a true hidden gem in the heart of the City of Wells. The Palace sits within 14 acres of RHS partner gardens, including the beautiful well pools from which the city takes its name. In the Arboretum is the newly developed "Dragon's Lair" children's playground to tire out little legs. There are daily Guided Tours, a Cafe serving delicious lunches, cakes and hot and cold drinks. Dogs are welcome on leads.

What could be nicer. Cream tea, lovely view, sheltered and peaceful (even with the occasional child yelling). Pretty gardens, interesting history. Not a huge venue but not tiny either, which is great because its easy to take your time and savour lots of gems. Lakes, moats, swans, picture perfect scenery. A credit to its keepers. Children will be bored.

i wasnt really looking foreard to walking around some gardens but how wrong could i be!! it was facinating to see how the gardens (and ruins) developed with each bishop over the centuries. it has something for the kids & big kids! and each area has a well presented informative plaque to tell you its significance. after a slow amble we had lunch in the cafe which although a little bit pricey was very nice. highly recommended for a fun afternoon

My husband and I celebrated our Blessing at The Bishop's Palace in December last year. The day was certainly one to remember. We wanted to hold the event somewhere that really shows off the beauty of the City and everyone was stunned by the location. The chapel and the hall looked fabulous. We had the downstairs fire roaring away while everyone sipped their drinks. The food was exquisite, we had a good time sampling and choosing the menu and wine before the date and the kitchen delivered on the day. The service was a little slow but that was noted by the Palace after our event for improvements to be made. The chef put a lot of effort into making everything have a 'local feel' so all our friends and family could have a taste of Somerset life. The Somerset Levellers set off the evening bash and everyone really enjoyed themselves. Every effort was made before and during our special event to make sure it was exactly what we wanted.

This has to be one of the most lovely and peaceful places to while away time and enjoy the buildings, the gardens and the water that is such a special feature. And a very nice restaurant as well.
