“A warm welcome at a fantastic location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2010

Dunster is a fantastic place to visit, our stay in the "Dunster Castle Hotel" was magical. The accomodation was modern, very clean and tidy. We stayed in the smallest double room the hotel had to offer but found it perfect for our needs. The food is of high standard, in respect of both quality and quantity. "Try the set menu £10 each" All the staff we had contact with, were helpfull and friendly. We will visit again.

We have just arrived home from this lovely place feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.Having read some of the reviews before booking we had high expectations and these were met.
On arrival we were greeted by Shantell and offered fresh cappucino(defo the best coffee in town) after our long journey which we drank on the comfy reception sofas before we checked in.We stayed in a beautiful room named Conygar (all the rooms have names with local connections)the huge bay window overlooked the pretty high street and was furnished with stunning oriental furniture and a huge bed with the most gorgeous vintage mirror which stood as tall as the room.
I ate the best steak ive ever eaten in the restaurant though the menu offered choices for even the most discerning palette.Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and was accompanied with fresh fruit, cereals and juices as well as freshly cooked croissants enough food to keep you going all day for sure. The breakfast room is a lovely light room overlooking the quaint high street ,we were not rushed to finish and were offered advice on local sightseeing as the actual castle is closed until March. We chose to visit Tarr Steps, and had lunch in Exford en route it was lovely even with the snow underfoot.
Tim and Shantell were warm hosts as were all the staff and nothing was too much trouble,we experienced none of the hiccups mentioned by two previous customers....loo roll.....we had two!....no double glazing.....the place is warm and cozy!....noise in the street.......its a village with only 300 residents!.....room too light at night......heavy curtains that wouldnt look out of place in the Castle itself!......space for toiletries......there are glass shelves in the bathrooms!......maybe just maybe Tim and Shantell are so dedicated they actually read these reviews and improve where they see fit.I hope they read this one..we loved our stay and will definitly be back,as soon as is possible.

we went for a wedding in dunster. we had a great time. Chantal and Tim were fun and attentive. Our room was a bit small compared to others but was clean and well decorated and we had lovely views of the sea and dunster below (we had the black and white room el motum or something). Breakfast was good too.
The reception was held at the hotel at they did a great job. Dunster is a beautiful village and would definately go back.

One couple from Norway, one couple from Italy and one couple from Australia. All of us employed in either the international airline business or hospitality management. We spend 3 nights at the Dunster Castle Hotel.

The location is charming, as is the room decor. Private parking at the back is handy, the bar is cozy and the breakfast is good.
We found the street noise from directly below (traffic light under the window) a major sleep disturbance, while our Italian friends didn´t mind it at all.
Closing the single glazed windows made no difference to the noise.
While the weather wasn´t very hot, the rooms were stifling. With one window painted shut there was only one window you could open, so no air circulation resulted in very stuffy rooms.
On day 1 our rooms were not cleaned, the towels were not changed and there was no don´t disturb/please clean room sign to hang on the door. An untidy room and used towels are not nice to come home to after a busy day.

The manager´s wife Chantelle is a hard worker. She also has the habit of loudly discussing matters pertaining to the guests with her bar and kitchen staff. As a guest, you feel you are being indirectly harangued. It´s intrusive and unprofessional.
Chantelle also has a single stock answer to any and all complaints from guests: "This is not a hotel, this is an Inn and you can´t expect hotel standards here."
With 125 pounds a night per room, and with a sign outside clearly stating ´Dunster Castle HOTEL´ (see photograph) this is a bizarre reaction.

While we were having breakfast the last morning, Chantelle sharply reminded us at 09.30 that check-out time was 10.30. While she couldn´t know that all our bags were packed and we were ready to go, both the pointed reminder and her brusque manner were uncalled for. We were much taken aback and despite having spent thousand of nights at hotels all over the world, none of us has ever experienced anything like it.
Taking into account that between the six of us we spent several thousand pounds on accommodation, food and drink at the establishment, both her ´reminder´ and the way it was delivered were totally out of order.
While her husband clearly has experience in the field, Chantelle has a lot to learn about working in the hospitality industry. It´s no good working hard and chatting with people when you can´t get the rooms cleaned and repeatedly offend your paying guests.

All in all our stay was very hit and miss, which for that price it should not have been.

My husband and I have just returned from a four night stay at this hotel and have had a great time We dined in the hotel every evening and can recommend the excellent food and wine The bedroom was home from home ( we stayed in the Grabbist room as we like a bathtub) and if we required anything we just asked. We have stayed at the hotel many times over the years as the location is great with parking an advantage We hope to return again soon.
