Owner description: The only remaining cheese makers in the Village of Cheddar, Somerset, UK. Passionate to preserve and protect this world famous cheese, John and Katherine Spencer and their exceptional team continue the tradition of hand-making unpasteurised cheddar cheese which they long-mature in cloth, the traditional way. With a small Visitor Centre and remarkable shop situated in the beautiful Cheddar Gorge itself, they welcome you to watch them make it, learn a little more about this heritage cheese and, of course, taste it!

This is the 2nd time we have been here, and maybe it was because it was out of season, or the shop was just quiet, but the staff were unhelpful. busy talking to each other. we wanted our own selection of three cheeses in a gift set and we were told we could not have them!! we made do with a pre made set. Disappointing revisit :( Wake up staff, and be welcoming to your customers!!!

We were very impressed by this shop, fabulous cheese, competent and friendly staff, lots of tastings and to our surprise, cheap cheese, we got 2 blocks of blue vintage cheddar for £2!!!

Taste real cheddar cheese, invented and made in Cheddar England! It was a moment to remember as my husband and I really enjoy delicious cheese. We tasted all of the varieties and then proceeded to buy several wedges which were all very reasonably priced. We took a brief walk through the processing area where we got to chat with a real cheese maker...he obviously took lots of pride in his job. It was lovely and a great experience to have in life.

Visited last summer expecting to really be shown and learn something - there wasn't even a staff member in the cheese factory! Wandered through within 10 minutes and my mum and I couldn't help laughing that we had paid for a visit which was very poor! The 'visit' columinates in exiting through the cheese shop - suprise, suprise!! Get your wallets and purses out as it is rather expensive and you can't help feeling obliged to buy something!!

I have to agree with Voyager020 here. We visited on a Sunday in Winter, and spent a bit of time looking at the various cheeses on offer. We wanted to take some home for family as a thank you gift, and so tried a few of the samples on offer. It felt like the man behind the counter was hovering over us the whole time, and you could tell he just wanted to serve us so they could shut the shop up. This would be fair enough had it been near closing time, but there was still 45 minutes until the shop was supposed to close! To be fair, the older lady that was in there was very polite, and helped us choose what we needed without hurrying us. After we had made our purchases, we left the shop and went into another. As soon as we left this shop we looked over to see the door firmly bolted on the Cheese Co. Obviously they had wanted to shut up early!

On the whole, I can recommend the cheddar cheese with chilli, and the jalapeno chutney is lovely. However, don't necessarily expect service with a smile, as you may not get it.
