Lovely visit, hostel's renovation has been a success in our view. Staff were very helpful and breakfast was excellent - personal service due to the time of our visit - sensible portions and well cooked. Room just off the lounge was suitable for disabled (not wheelchair). Self-catering facilities and dining lounge were central, clean and comfortable.

Room Tip: room 8 suited us well. Might be noisy when high occupancy as its beside the lounge.

We stayed there one weekend in December and felt instantly at home. We were welcomed by a very friendly warden and settled down to a cup of tea in the lounge, watching 'Strictly' while playing cards available for guests.
We could have eaten at the hostel, but elected to walk in to the Village and had a marvellous meal at the pub recommended to us.
Our room was very basic, but clean and great fro the price, even though we had to put the sheets etc on our own bunk beds. We were too late to get an ensuite room, but really the tiolet and showers were very near and were clean and welcoming.

thank you for your great review.
im especially happy about your kind comments to do with our staff and the cleanliness of our hostel. im glad we could make you feel at home from the outset.
it is normal, in the YHA, for our guest to make their own beds. We apologise if this was a surprise to you.
we hope to see you again in the future.

En suite room, clean and tidy, comfy bunks. Breakfast good. Near to the pub for tea and not far from the gorge and caves. A good place central for Cheddar caves and walking.and I don't beleive in waffling about a load of junk just to make this review 200 words long, so there Trip Advisor!!!

I'll keep it to the point - it's cheap and very basic as expected in a YHA - it's not really my cup of tea, but I see the benefit. We stayed in the annexe which was clean but without some of the character of the main building. Breakfast was a Full English at £4.99 - however sausages had precious little meat content and no choice of egg - only scrambled.

Main plus point was the staff who were friendly and helpful when we arrived.

Cheddar Gorge as an attraction is pretty expensive. If you're short on cash maybe just stick the the National Trust footpaths, or bring your rock climbing equipment! There's a £5 ticket for a walk up Jacob's Ladder and viewing tower which is steep in a lot of ways, but enjoyable nonetheless!

If you're going by car, Tyntesfield National Trust is a must see - it's not like any other NT property I've been to. I usually switch off straight away, but this was very much an untouched, honest and immersive experience where you can truly step back in time. Well worth the £15 - don't bother with the Gorge...

Room Tip: If you want a nice room, maybe splash out on a nearby B&B instead

If you want to be near the Cheddar caves etc. this is the place to be only a ten minute walk away. We had really friendly welcome, lots of good advice. Fairly standard rooms with ok bathroom facilities. Both the kitchens on site are well equipped and kept clean.

Cheddar YHA is a fairly standard hostel. It's clean, well-equipped and we had an excellent breakfast there. The warden was very welcoming and helpful - advising us on places to eat. It's a good value place to stay. The common room is a little spartan, with the usual (for the YHA, in my experience) poor lighting if one wants to read at night! The self-catering kitchen is well-equipped and very clean. I got the impression that this hostel is visited by a lot of groups. We were relieved that we just missed a group of 35 that were due to arrive the following day. It's in an excellent location - just a ten minute walk from the gorge. It's at the foot of the Mendips and on the edge of the Somerset levels, so it makes a great, good value base for exploring the area. We had a three-bedded room - a double lower bunk and a single upper bunk. One side, and the end, of the double bunk was straight against a wall so getting up in the middle of the night was disruptive to both parties. Be warned! But it made a reasonable sized family room.

What a fascinating place the village of Cheddar is with sooo much to do and this gem of a hostel is right there at the heart of it. Clean with friendly staff, free parking, good food, it was a great family break for my husband, my 6 year old son and my niece. It's a 3 star hostel not the Ritz and great value for money. The bedroom carpets could do with updating and there were musty smells in some parts. However, it had a fab self catering kitchen and a well equipped tv lounge, very family friendly overall. I will recommend it to anybody!
