Description: Raphael restaurant is a much loved restaurant located in the heart of the beautiful city of Bath. Open since 2001 Raphael has established an excellent reputation for serving fabulous European inspired modern British food. Raphael has a cosy atmosphere and exquisite food, perfect for leisurely lunches, pre-theatre dining and intimate meals for two, the ideal place for any occasion. The head chef and his team create imaginative dishes using the freshest local produce available, with the emphasis on seasonality. At Raphael all of the mouth-watering desserts are made in-house, including the delicious ice-creams and sorbets. The friendly and professional staff welcome you warmly, whether you area visitor to the city or one of the regular clientele, many of whom have become good friends over the years. The wine list has been carefully chosen to ensure wines that complement the food perfectly, with reasonable prices, coupled with some amazing bin-ends.

The - welcome was good - in general the food was okay - service overall good but not the greatest - however the staff were friendly - we knew there would be a 10% service charge as this is applied to parties of 6 or more - with the good NOT excellent service this is a disgrace. There was an item on the menu which was not available - this we only found out at the time of ordering - we still would have stayed but it would have been better to have been told at the time we were seated - wine service poor - a taste and then you are left to your own devices. Overall not a good experience - very expensive for what they offer.

Although we only rang to book late on a Saturday afternoon we made a reservation for 8pm, being so close to the theater there is a pre-show rush at Raphael's.
The food was lovely, just the right size, I had a goats cheese tart to start, and for main there was a variety of choice - steak, lamb, we had chicken and duck.
Dessert was creamy creme brulee and home made icecream.
Food was tender and succulent, staff were really attentive but in a relaxed manner.
A good variety of wine, new and old world - we tried glasses of traditional french and then a lighter chilean merlot.

thoroughly recommended, and all for about £35 per head

Just opposite the Theatre Royal, this is a French Bistro style of restaurant (with a “British twist” according to it’s strapline). The menu didn’t strike me as particularly French, so maybe it was more influenced by it’s British twist. At least one of the waitresses was however.

It’s quite a long narrow restaurant, and was full to capacity with pre-theatre diners when we visited, although by the time we left it was much quieter. You could choose from the regular menu, pre-theatre menu (2 courses for £14.95) or a specials menu. Some of the choices on the pre-theatre menu were off the main menu, although not all. Various side dishes were optional, although as our mains came with veg anyway we just shared a dauphinoise potato which was very creamy and garlicky! Overall we were very pleased with what we chose, although one of the starters could have been a little tastier.

I have been to Raphael several times now usually in the early evening. The service is always brilliant, and there is an excellent choice of food with a set menu, a la carte and several specials.

The food at Raphaels is always top notch, both in terms of content and presentation, and portions that are neither nouveau nor voluminous, but just right. The service is exceedingly good: and you always have greate confidence in everything they do. Being 'theatre friendly' they know how to get you to your seat in time for the curtain call, but equally not feel rushed (they like you to be at the restaurant well in advance so you can have a relaxed meal). Wonderful!
