“Lovely Friday dinner”

Had a great meal last Friday at the circus restaurant. Service was just right, food imaginative and well cooked, interesting wine selection and fun atmosphere in a busy place.

“great cooking”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

we really enjoyed our saturday night here with some friends and getting to try the circus restaurant after hearing many rave reviews. We were not disappointed, really nice atmosphere, the place was packed, friendly staff and really excellent cooking. Nice menu we had muscles to start, sea bass and salsa verde for main, all nicely cooked. Would come back.

Thank you for your valuable and appreciated comments about the Circus. It is such an incentive for our hard working team to get these pats on the back from our diners.

“a touch of magic”
Reviewed January 31, 2013

The friendliness and warmth is immediately apparent and it is soon clear that it is a genuine consequence of this young team's belief and confidence in the product. Staff are a delight and cannot do enough to make one feel completely at home. Food is exceptional, imaginative, impressively sourced with "line caught" special fish dishes changing daily. Even the olive oil was a find-and the staff came straight back with the name of the source when asked. A soup of celeriac and apple had real intensity of flavour in every ingredient. Carpaccio of smoked haddock was delicate, light and a truly original and totally harmonious marriage of flavours. Deserts are excellent, combinations such as chocolate and hazelnut miniature torte and a rhubarb and saffron creme brûlée were outstanding. Book early-this place is busy mid-week in January!

“Empty but full”
Reviewed January 30, 2013

After visiting the circus on a very windy day, we popped in to The Circus cafe. We were asked with a smile if we wanted lunch, but when we explained we just wanted a tea and coffee the manageress continued to smile but you sensed she was not happy we were not going to have lunch there and we was directed to a window seat. I found the window seat uncomfortable as it was not a proper seat and asked the waitress who brought our drinks if we could move. She said we couldn't as the tables were reserved for lunch, bearing in mind we were the only customers there? She did speak to the manageress quietly and we were moved but we were told that we must vacate the table at 1pm. It was 12pm so this was not a problem as I don't normally take an hour to drink a cup of tea. If there it was a sunny day and knew the area I would of got up and walked out and I did feel like saying something at the time but my partner does not like a fuss. Another couple came in after us and they were given the window seat we vacated. I don't mind sitting where've we can be squeezed in if it is just for a drink but the cafe/restaurant was empty, we did notice however that every table was reserved. If they were expecting a coach load of people to turn up then that would explain it, but we didn't get that feeling and we certainly were not informed this to be the case. We therefore drank our drinks as quick as we could, paid and left. I must stress that nobody was impolite but there just felt uneasy. If patrons are not completely welcome for drinks only then I suggest taking "cafe" out of the name. I cannot comment on the food obviously, but I would not go back to find out.

This is a dilemma that needs addressing! I'm so sorry you felt uneasy over your cup of tea but the restaurant had all the reserved signs on the tables as those tables were indeed booked out for lunch and, as it clearly states on the menus in the window, we theoretically stop serving coffees and start serving lunch at midday. Hence the tentativeness of my staff in offering you refreshments at midday. I'm sorry if that sounds unfriendly but we are a busy neighbourhood restaurant and our regulars book our tables well in advance and expect to find those tables ready for them when they arrive. Some people do take a long time over their coffees and teas and this then upsets lunchtime service. Again, apologies that this wasn't fully explained to you at the time.

“Oh the soup!”
Reviewed January 26, 2013 via mobile

Just had the best soup ever, celeriac and the oh so subtle touch of apple! And a few yummy apple crisps too, divine. Oh and should I admit to trying the choc/hazelnut pud? YES YES and more YES.
