Description: The Bathwick Boatman is a tranquil slice of gastronomic heaven, located just 10 minutes stroll from Bath's city centre on the picture-perfect banks of the River Avon. Run by husband and wife restaurateur team Ben and Rosy Hall, the restaurant is set in an old rowing club with beautiful river views and a cosy, rustic ambience. After training in Italy and Spain, Ben worked in Miami before returning home to Britain, and his simple, seasonal menu is full of robust flavours and represents good old-fashioned value for money. The Bathwick Boatman has a divine summer terrace, and is perched just above Bath's historic boating station, where you can hire a punt or a rowing boat for a post-meal paddle.

“Good menu, great food.”
Reviewed May 18, 2013

We visited the Bathwick Boatman on Friday evening and really enjoyed our meal. The menu was fresh and exciting and you could see it was created with passion. The food itself was great and delivered with happy and friendly service. It appeared to be a bit understaffed but this did not have a negative impact on our evening.
Very enjoyable and would highly recommend it to everyone.
For anyone who thinks it is a bit too far out of town, it is worth the walk (it is only 5 minutes walk from The Holburne Museum).

“Newly discovered, lovely venue, great food, super service”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

Despite living in the area for a few years we hadn't heard of the Bathwick Boatman until I came across reviews of it on Tripadvisor. Three of us went to celebrate a family birthday on a weekday evening. It was quiet but the decor and views create an atmosphere that is so different to other venues in the city centre. It felt like we were on holiday in another country (except for the chilly weather than kept us from venturing onto the balcony area to enjoy the views in the fresh air!)

The service was really good; our friendly and helpful waiter greeting the birthday boy as we arrived. He was happy to pop into the kitchen to find out the answers to our various enquiries about where some of the ingredients and beers were sourced, as well as how the chef smoked the salmon. The menu was excellent, offering some interesting dishes and also good choices for vegetarians, not the usual goats cheese and red onion tart option!

We did manage three courses as they were all so tempting. I had the smoked salmon and it was divine, sliced thick and very succulent, served with thickly sliced bread. I chose a dish of lentils with ginger and garlic, topped with Parmesan and pine nuts for my main course, which came steaming hot with greens. A very hearty dish for a chilly April evening! For dessert I had honeycomb and stem ginger ice cream with buttery shortbread. The stem ginger was puréed and served as a topping for the delicious ice cream. The birthday boy was brought his pannacotta with a candle in, a nice touch!

The wine list has some interesting wines at a reasonable price, and they offer a couple of ales, which although bottled, were nonetheless enjoyed, with our thoughtful waiter asking if they'd be preferred chilled or at room temperature.

We had a lovely evening with delicious food and drink, and felt that the bill was very reasonable for the quality. We will certainly return, hopefully to sit outside in the sun and enjoy the view over the river while sampling some more of the menu.

“Excellent as always”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

We found the Bathwick Boatman four years ago and always visit when in Bath which is at least once a year.Rosie always remembers us and makes us very welcome. We always book for Saturday evening well in advance. They never fail to deliver and this year was no exception. The Fowey Mussel starter, locally reared sirloin steak, piri piri cod from the specials board, honeycomb ice cream with stem ginger all varied from perfect to sublime. All accompaniments were excellent and the chips a different class(Rosie tells me the secret is to cook them twice in fresh oil).
We have tried restaurants in Bath this week that are in the top ten including the currently rated no.1 and can honestly say that the Bathwick Boatman is up there on a par with them.
Thanks Rosie and Ben,our 400 mile round trip from Lincolnshire is well worth the journey.
