“Pleasantly surprised”
Reviewed December 15, 2013

We come to Bath once or twice a year and have in the past stayed at other hotels which charge twice as much for their rooms. Having read that Bailbrook House had refurbished all their rooms and had a fine dining restaurant we decided to book here for our December trip to visit the Christmas Market. We arrived midday Saturday and checked in, the reception called us a taxi which took us into town, past the queuing traffic in the taxi lane, 5 minutes. On return we were very pleased with our standard room - lovely bed, great shower with complimentary toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities and a good TV. The meal in the Cloisters restaurant was very good, small starters for the price but superb steak and guinea fowl main and very yummy deserts. The setting in the Cloisters was great with an amazing view to Bath Abbey and beyond. Breakfast the following morning was equally as good with great choice and the full English was great.
I have scored the hotel 4/5 as there were a couple of minor points that meant the stay wasn't perfect but nothing to complain about and would definitely stay again. Tip - look for discounted room rate on Expedia.

Thank you for posting a review on TripAdvisor.I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay during your stay in Bath for the market - I have read lots of reviews that it was the best ever. Most of the rooms are in a modern extension but have all you want, big comfy bed, newly refitted and so on, it’s a short £7 taxi ride from the city and has some great views from the bar and other areas around the main building.

It’s a big place, and isn’t a ‘cosy’ country house hotel but id stay again and would also use it for business conferences, restaurant looked okay but felt like a conference room with ding tables in it but the breakfast was very good as was room service

Wine in the bar is expensive(ish) at £15 a glass but at £200 for a basic room its what you expect

Room Tip: First floor, low numbers otherwise its a bit of a walk to the main building

The greeting by reception was excellent and all the staff were attentive and helpful . Our room William Pitt was well appointed and very clean . If we were only evaluating the hotel and staff it would easily achieve five stars . Unfortunately the Cloisters restaraunt let it down badly . At dinner my starter scallop with crab ravioli was minuscule in size and there was very little crab in the thick pasta . We followed with the turbot dish which was served on cold new potatoes .I could not face another failure for pudding so chose cheese and biscuits since this required no skill from the chef . At breakfast the next morning we returned two dishes to the kitchen since they failed to please . We obviously complained but the only feedback from the waitress was to offer her apologies. The Cloisters restaurant is under performing and is certainly overpriced for its dinner offering.
I would still rate the hotel highly but would suggest having dinner at one of the many restaraunts in Bath

Thank you for posting a review on TripAdvisor.I am sorry that your stay was let down by your experience of Cloisters Restaurant. I am disappointed that the Restaurant Manager did not come over to see you. I have spoken to Matt and ask that he should always make him self available to discuss guests comments.Peter Manners our Head Chef has said that he will review the size of the ravioli dish and that he too is sorry that you did not enjoy dinner. Thank you for your feedback, improvements will be made.

We had a superb experience at Bailbrook House Hotel, 6th December 2013 in the Mansion House part.

The room was fantastic(The John Wood), the bed very comfortable, and the bathroom out of this world.

Everywhere, the quality of workmanship, interior décor, the fabrics and furnishings was first class, with lots of thought gone into the design and presentation. Housekeeping could not be faulted, especially the turn-down service. The room and all the public areas were spotlessly clean and gleaming.

Breakfast was beautiful, with a big choice. The venue, the Cloisters, was lovely with its views over the garden and over to Bath making it all the more enjoyable.

The staff were all highly professional and friendly. We appreciated the welcome drink in the lounge. I hesitate to single anyone out, but Matt was exceptionally professional, knowledgeable, helpful and personable.

The extra little touches, like fresh milk in the fridge, all made it a really memorable stay. This is a top class hotel. Well done to the GM Jonathan Squire and his staff. And a big thank you.

Room Tip: Rooms in the Mansion House are more expensive, but well worth it.

Having stayed at several Handpicked Hotels, this is way off the standard of others. What the hotel lacks is any charm or atmosphere, it very much feels like a conference centre.
Our visit got off to a bad start with a chaotic check in. As the room wasn't ready, we went into Bath for a few hours only to return to find our luggage had gone missing. 45 minutes later it finally arrived but the staff seemed totally disorganised.
We had dinner in the Cloisters restaurant. - a big fuss was made about how lucky we were that they were able to squeeze us in. As it happens, we were one of only 4 tables and the restaurant was silent and again lacking atmosphere. Some music would have been very welcome!
My crab ravioli was raw which I pointed out and merely got an apology, no offer of a properly cooked ravioli to replace it which was disappointing.
Overall the staff here are all very pleasant but the hotel itself was a let down. We were not sorry to leave. Having previously stayed at the Royal Crescent hotel! this pales by comparison.

The hotel is located outside Bath and as others have said, while walkable (just) if you are fit and have plenty of time, the road is not a particularly pleasant stretch, so just pay the £9 or so for a taxi and save the time. Whatever you do, don't try to drive in and park. Bath is NOT car friendly.

The hotel is in beautiful grounds with a sweeping tarmac drive up and a pretty impressive entrance. The initial impression at reception was of a bit of chaos (a common theme this Christmas Market weekend in Bath!) but the cheery receptionist was the first of many unusually helpful and friendly staff.

Our executive bedroom was in the "extension" - I think it's just suites and similar in the main building - but the extension name should not put you off. The quality and finish in the rooms is high and the building/decoration materials they have used are of a very high standard throughout. The shower lacked power, but I guess we all agree that a powerful waterfall of water is sadly a rarity in the UK!

Service in the bar was excellent.
Breakfast was the usual buffet style but high quality, and omeletes, kippers etc. were available to order at no extra charge. We did not have to wait for a table at 9.30am on Sunday. Service, as everywhere, great.
We had dinner out so can't comment.

I have the impression that they have ironed out the initial problems after the renovation so would now recommend for sure.

What a find. We stayed in the John Eveleigh suite and it was outstanding. All mod cons but beautifully furnished. The bathroom is something else with double shower, roll top bath and Tv. In fact there are 3 tv's in all! Views to die for and staff very friendly and helpful. We ate in Cloisters Restaurant and the food was very good - although very expensive for what it is. Not sure we would eat in their again but it is in a beautiful room. Small niggle in room - management should review lighting - central light very bright but when turned off you have 3 small lamps with very low wattage bulbs. You need two more standard lamps for such a large bedroom. Overall though - great. Best Handpicked Hotel we have stayed at.
