It's got what you expect and a bit more. It's local; the coffee is good, the service pleasant and the cakes.... I haven't seen Lardy cake since I was young and it was terrific and my granddaughter certainly put away the "brown thing" or more appropriately Chocolate Brownie. Prices are fine.

We had 2 scones and 2 teas. The scones were poor for a cafe, not half as good as Sainsburys. The did not look very good but looks can be deceptive, but not in this case. Poor value at £7

A very good local café. About a 10/15 minute walk from the railway/bus station, up a fairly steep hill; but it's a pleasant walk and the café is a good stop off point if you're visiting Alexandra Park with it's wonderful view over the city. Specialises in offering locally grown produce, and serves breakfast, lunch (I can recommend the stilton/cranberry sandwich), and good cakes. The Bear Pad also exhibits the work of local artists/craftspeople, has WiFi connection, and it's opposite the wonderful Rolfey's, affordable antique shop, which is always good for a browse.

Breakfast, lunch and just coffee and cake all enjoyed thoroughly here. The staff are always very friendly and helpful. Perusing the local produce and art available to buy make the visit even more enjoyable.
