I stayed for 2 nights in one of the dorms. In that time I made the following observations:

The bar / reception staff are friendly and it is a central location, HOWEVER:
The bed linen was not changed between guests.
There is a 'chill out' room. Sounds good. That is until you go in and and see the plug socket for the TV is hanging out of the wall, and there are wires poking out.
The dorms have electronic key cards for 'security'. Sounds good. Until a guy mistakenly swipes his card at the female dorm door I was staying in -and it opens.
The first morning there were some basic breakfast items available in the bar. The second morning there was an early morning football match on so they weren't doing breakfast (although my second night cost more than the first!)
As the rooms are above/next to the bar it is VERY noisy into the night.

We had a friendly crowd, despite the large number of guys wearing just speedos. 7am is a little early for sexy man-wear. Yet, very polite and considerate.

The guy at the bar who checked us in was quite nice, and stored our bags for us without any fuss. A boring breakfast but filling. Secure entrance separate from the exit was nice.

Push-button showers, we recommend leaning on the shower button. But a lot of stalls and showers, which is always a plus in our book.

The bar is packed with university students at night. Decor not recommended for U.S. tourists, unless you're homesick. A lot of American movie posters.

Location was good, but a little too far out to be great. Too far from train station if you've got a serious amount of luggage.

My partner and I stayed one night at St Christopher's Inn having not been able to locate affordable accommodation in Bath at short notice.

We slept in Room 1, an 8 bed dorm that was far too small to comfortabley accommodate that many people. One bunk didn't even have a ladder so my partner had to improvise to reach the top. The hallways and bathrooms were grubby and the chill out room was horrid with stained, damaged sofas.

There is no excuse for hostels to be so run down and over crowded and at 22 pounds each it wasn't even "dirt cheap".

Only suitable for back packers who want somewhere to collapse after partying. Anyone else wanting affordable accommodation in Bath without sacrificing all comfort should book a B&B well in advance or stay in a neighbouring area.

I'll get the "bad" off my chest, and then go on with the "good."

I did not have high expectations for the room, but did expect it to be clean. The beds themselves seem clean and the bedding clean, but that is where it ends. While we stayed there 2 nights, the bedding was not changed.

The walls have tears, stains and marks all over them. All rugs are worn and tattered. The showers, which are so small your backside rubs one wall while your head the opposite in order to pick up a bottle of shampoo because there are no shelves, has mold all 'round the edges.

But that's not the worst. They have a sign up declaring they've put in water saving shower heads, meaning there's a button you push for water. No temperature control whatsoever, and, worse, it goes off in 1 second. ONE SECOND! So you must learn to push over and over continuously with one hand as you scrub like mad with your other.

And in this "water conserving" room, there is a sink with a non-stop running water leak. Sigh.

We tried to take the opportunity of a special of £22 per person for 2 nights and including a tour to Stonehenge, requiring prepayment. Sounds like a good deal, but when we booked, we requested that there be some guarantee that we have the males/females grouped, as we are two parents and two kids. We had expected them to agree or decline. Instead, we were given a 4-bed dorm, which means there were no costs to them for any wasted beds/room, yet we were charged £45 per person. A bit steep for them not having lost any beds to our request.

For a family of four, this was a difference of £92, or $184!

When we checked in, we were treated friendly enough, but told we could have a 10% discount on pub food for being boarders. I thought the website quoted 20%, but went to check first: even the signs posted in the dorms stated 20%.

Later, when we inquired about keeping our bags beyond the checkout time, we were quoted 50p TOTAL -- I was very specific in clarifying that it was not per bag but total cost. With this info, we did not look into alternatives. The next morning, with a FULL last day planned, we took our bags downstairs and were told unwaveringly that the cost was per bag and so we had to check 5 bags and left feeling a bit taken. Later, the original person who gave us the price apologized and confirmed it was PER BAG with his apologies. This did not help at all.

SO, overall, one simply cannot count on any pricing to be firm at this place, and it's always an error to your disadvantage.

OK! The good part? THE LOCATION CAN NOT BE BEAT. Right in the heart of the city center, one can easily walk to anywhere within minutes. Simply marvelous location.

Security was good, and we felt very comfortable with this aspect. Other than being misquoted for pricing (a big problem by our standard) the staff was quite friendly.

Based on other reviews, we brought earplugs, but never needed them.
