A busy Saturday evening is the background. Started with an impromptu red and white wine tasting courtesy of the Patron which was excellent. Tapas and main courses chosen were very good. Lamb meatballs were not hot but Tiger prawns excellent and hot chorizo and peppers very very tasty. Piri Piri sauce with chicken was spot on ! Good choice of sensibly priced wines of good quality. On a cold evening seating upstairs does feel a cold draught when entrance door in use. Couple of menu items were unavailable and coffee machine not working. The Patron (and later his mother) make you very welcome and despite the busyness he finds time to engage with everyone. An enjoyable evening at reasonable cost. Will go back.

The service came with a smile and the food was fairly tasty. However, its let down by a poor drink selection and it's lacking a few finishing touches.

We were recommended to try this little gem and were thrilled with our lunch. All the dishes were cooked to order and were very tasty. The house white wine was a good choice to compliment the food.

Still can't quite believe the list of things that went wrong on this visit. First of all - it was very chilly in this cafe-type restaurant. Second - no red wine. Why? There must be shops nearby where they could have brought in a few bottles. Settled for the sangria, which was very nice, but not what we wanted. Third - quite a few items listed on the menu were unavailable. Fourth - When my tapas arrived, they'd also run out of an item I'd chosen and substituted chips with cheese, without informing me and allowing me to choose something else. Chips with cheese! Fifth - After we'd eaten the tapas, which were all quite tasty, I have to say, we ordered coffee and liqueurs. You've guessed it - the coffee machine was out of order! The very, VERY apologetic waiter gave us the sangria without charge, and even threw in a chocolate mousse (mum's special), but that never makes up for the disappointment of things going so badly wrong. Comparing this place back-to-back evenings with Sotto Sotto (see reviews for this excellent establishment), it's pretty embarrassing for Portvcale. Maybe we were just unlucky, but so many things went wrong, it's difficult to believe this is the case.
