“Simply superb”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

Suffused with Soho chic, the decor is simple and understated. The atmosphere is relaxed but expectant. This restaurant, showed with accolades and rave reviews, has a reputation of excellence that must be almost impossible to maintain. Almost. The genius of Menu Gordon Jones is that it serves exquisite food that is grounded in reality - it's all very well being creative and artistic, but this is food that is real, seasonal, local where possible, and substantial. The menu is creative in a fun, playful way - harmonised ingredients with a taste twist in each course, and not a culinary cliche evident at all. But a restaurant is so much more than food. And this is where MGJ has the edge - the sommelier is brilliant. The selection of wines is superb and should not be overshadowed by the food. The sommelier is informative, tireless in his enthusiasm for the wines he has selected and as bold and creative as the chef. This great team is complemented by laidback but quietly attentive staff. We booked to go back before we had even finished our deserts. How lucky we are in Bath to have this gem.

“A Superb Eating Experience”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

And a superb experience is just what you get in this bijou and almost impossible to get into in less than a couple of months restaurant. But it's well worth the wait! Inventive, flavoursome and beautifully presented dishes are the house specialty; each course accompanied by a well chosen, but unusual wine. Service is attentive, but not oppressive and the sommelier is entertainingly knowledgeable. And though it's not cheap, it's undeniably good value for money. Very special and highly recommended.

“Still fantastic”
Reviewed September 22, 2013 via mobile

We don't eat out often but a return trip here after 13 months was not a disappointment. The food was delicious, matched wines almost perfect and the service is excellent. The friendly and relaxed atmosphere is what sets this place apart in addition to the great food. I feel there is little point going out to eat the food you would or can cook fairly easily at home and so it is worth the wait and extra cost of places like this. Please don't leave Bath but a shorter waiting list for Fridays and Saturdays would be welcome!

We managed to get a table for lunch by quirk of fate. Concept is brilliant; food is brilliant; service is brilliant. Will be returning.

“Hail to the chef!”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

Walking into MGJ I was greeted by 'Dimension' by Wolfmother playing loud and proud. It's a gratuitous 70's inspired piece of rock brilliance and definitely not what 99% of restaurants would or should be playing. The playlist continued, Jet, Kasabian, The Vines, QOTSA. It may seem an arbitrary point to talk about the music but I feel it sums up Gordon's approach, as he put it himself at the end of my superb lunch, 'life is too short'.
Inventive, delicious, great service, brilliant value.
Hail to the chef and his crew. GO. EAT.
