“Bed & Breakfast Disappointment”
Reviewed April 23, 2013

As experienced B & B users, we found The Ayrlington lacking in most areas that we consider difference-makers between B & Bs and Hotels. The Bed was comfortable and The Breakfast was good, but, other than the fine reception staff, all of the little things were missing. We never met the owner, there was zero interaction with the other guests, there was a charge for cheap wine and no snacks, like peanuts or chips. Our room, though spacious and looking out at the beautiful garden, was separate fm the rest of the house and felt like an afterthought, had zero European or British character, no air conditioning (at least not that we could find), no tissues, no bar bath soap (only body wash), some obvious maintenance issues, and a crummy hair dryer compared to other places we have stayed. The saving grace was the location, which was a short walk to Bath Centre, and the staff, especially Chris, who went above and beyond our expectations, assisting us in getting takeaway dinner, and early bfast and transportation the next morning. The Ayrlington could be a very nice option for enjoying the wonderful Bath experience, but needs to get on board with the special touches that make B & Bs so special. We would NOT stay at this place on a future visit to Bath.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in April. This was our 4th stay because this hotel WAS so good but we will not be back again.
A long while ago it was, at best, a 4 star hotel but whoever put it up to 5 stars is having a laugh....at your expense. It is the niff-naff things which finally make your mind up. Parking was difficult, but not for the owners.....who have their own marked spaces. Up to the room, it was very small and very tired with a bed that was barely a double. So, to unpack and put the usual cameras, ipads and other valuables into the safe, except that it did not lock. I told reception, and because there is nobody there to do maintenance I offered to change the batteries in the safe myself (5 star?)....wrong size batteries were supplied at which point I gave up, but not before noticing that the safe was not even attached to the wall, indicating that this procedure had already been gone through....and failed, and then ignored until we complained. The safe was never fixed during our 4 days in the hotel although I was given £2.50 worth of sherry to "paper" over the problem after 2 days!
So, you can live without a safe but when the paint peeling old sash widows (behind faded old see-through lightweight curtains) need folded cardboard to pack them out to stop them rattling all night and the secondary double glazing catches are broken and hence will not shut, it gets annoying at 3am trying to fix it so you can go back to your tiny bed and try to get back to sleep.
£330 for 3 days and you have to stretch the original bathroom supplies because, as is mentioned on another review, they will not be renewed; I even bought my own soap because none was supplied. I drew the line at replacing the dead light bulbs and fixing the broken extractor fan myself (see other peoples' reviews) This place is faded literally and needs a shake up, but the most telling thing is that despite lots of mediocre reviews on here there has NEVER been a comment from the owners which can only imply they don't care.
Enjoy your stay.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms are smaller rooms with no lift.

I stayed one night during a visit to Bath with my partner. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and offer recommendations where to visit/eat etc. However having stayed in various 5* hotels I do not consider this to be one. The hotel is very old fashioned and out dated and could do with a refurb. The room I stayed in was spacious and clean but yet again very old fashioned. The bathroom I believe was not of 5 star quality. Breakfast was average. Furthermore the lift was out of order and therefore we had to carry luggage up 3 flights of stairs. On a positive note there is parking on site and the hotel is only a 10minute walk from the centre of Bath. I feel this hotel should be graded to a 3 star bed and breakfast. Not suitable for young couples hoping for a busy hotel. The bar (if you could call it a bar) was very small and only open until 10pm. However the staff were charming and the hotel was very clean. Overall our stay was pleasant but feel we could have got more for our money elsewhere.

My husband and I stayed at the Ayrlington over Easter for 3 nights, we were accommodated in the Chinese room in the ground floor.
First off the Ayrlington is nice and easy to find and has the bonus of free parking - our reception was very welcoming and the lady who greeted us (Audrey) was very helpful in advising us of where to go and what to do. We liked our room and found it very spacious and comfortable also very clean. It has ornate high ceilings and lovely dark wood furnishings. A couple of minor points - the bathroom though clean was a bit overlooked by the car park as my husband found out to his embarrassment! The room fronts the car park so doesn't have a fantastic outlook and is slightly noisy but this didn't bother us too much. The shower screen could do with replacing as it leaks water. The bed was advertised as king size but I don't think it was. There is tons of storage though and a safe.
Reception were brilliant the whole time from local information to sorting out a couple of minor issues we had in the room (curtain came off its tracks and the window opening had a problem), these were attended to quickly though. Hannah and Ling Ling (the owner) were both really friendly and couldn't do enough to help us, it did feel very homely and welcoming.
Breakfast was lovely, just right amounts and not too fatty - service was also good with2 ladies serving. Guest house was full and the breakfast room does get busy but this didn't seem to be a problem. The drawing room is also really nice to relax and read the papers in with a fire going, it has a small bar.
The guest house was really warm (maybe a bit too warm, I was a bit too hot the first night in our room) but this was far preferable to being cold!!
The place is ideally situated for walking into bath with all that has to offer.
We did feel the prices were a bit on the high side ( we paid £170a night for 3 nights) as others have said it is a 5 star B&B not a hotel, so I think we could have got more for our money elsewhere but it is charming and we did enjoy our stay!

Room Tip: I think the rooms at the back would be quieter with a better view

On arriving at The Ayrlington the first problem was a lack of parking. The next was that that there is no lift, so we had to climb four flights of stairs to get to our room and with a heavy suite case is not one that I would like to repeat. Room was a bit tired and could have done with a refurb. Breakfast was average. On the plus side, staff are very helpfull and provide a good service. The Ayrlington is very central to Bath, but should be graded as a 3 to 4 star bed breakfast, as it is definitely not 5 star as advertised. Should you choose to stay at The Ayrlington, ask for a room at the back, as the ones at the front are adjacent to the main road and therefore noisy.

This hotel is in a nice location, not too far away from the attractions. I couldn't always get WiFi in the hotel room but I didn't mind too much. The breakfast is cooked to your liking, the room was clean and the bath pristine. Great views of the city are available from the room on the top floor, of course there is no lift so try not to bring everything on your visit here! Some people have commented on the bizarre decor, don't let it deter you!
