We booked this hotel for a 3 night stay after looking at the reviews. Also one of the major attractions was on site car parking. However there are 16 rooms but only enough parking for approx. 8 cars in the designated bays. You can park 3 cars in-line along the internal wall but you could stand the chance of being boxed in.
I was parked no 3 in line and was about to leave the hotel to go to the city when the room phone rang and I was asked if I could move my car as a group of residents were leaving, in their people carrier, and were boxed in. The vehicle was too wide to negotiate past mine. 5 mins later we would have been gone for the day, into the city, and they would have been stuck for the duration!!! So if in doubt, ask for a permit and park in the road outside in the designated areas.
On arrival we had a friendly welcome, we sat in the lounge, where we were instantly offered tea/coffee and a small delicious flapjack. We were informed about the hotel and it's amenities and the best way to walk to the city plus given a map and some literature.
Our room was No. 1 (Classic Queen Sized Double). It was well decorated, not overtly large, but adequate. Tea/coffee making facilities, bottled water, and a nice flat screen TV with the usual freesat stations. Other additions were a DVD player (you could borrow DVD's) and a hair dyer.
The bed was one of the most comfortable we have slept in and there was no noise, during the night, both internally & externally.
En suite shower room with instant hot water was very clean however the wash hand basin was set rather on the low side so was difficult when cleaning teeth/shaving as you had to stoop to use the basin effectively. This is not a criticism of our stay but an observation.
Breakfast was very good, I availed myself of the cooked breakfast and it was served relatively quickly and piping hot with good quality ingredients. They did not serve it with beans, which was good for me as I am not a fan of baked beans, (get sick of having to say no beans when I go elsewhere)
Service was always with a smile with friendly and attentive staff.
There was an issue when we arrived, as due to an earlier internal water leak, the ground floor ceiling had collapsed in a small section at the foot of the stairs. Due to Health and Safety grounds the staircase was closed off at this point. There would have only been one flight of stairs to negotiate to get to our room, however we had to go to the rear staircase which took us to the 2nd floor the we had to walk down another flight to get to our room.
There were copious apologies re this, but it was not their fault it was a circumstance that prevailed at the time and we were able to get around the issue. It did not detract from our stay.
I ordered champagne for the room on arrival and it was duly in place. All we had to do was let reception know when we wanted to drink it and they changed the 'display' bottle for one straight out of the fridge in an ice bucket. There is a PC with wifi in the lounge.
It is a 10 min walk (downhill) to the city centre but may take a little longer on the return (uphill), especially when you have been walking all day. But the hotel is ideally placed, far from the maddening crowds.
We did enquire at a couple of hotels in the city, on behalf of friends who wished to visit, re car parking and they stated no car parking you have to use the council run car parks nearby. So Oldfields wins by a mile on this aspect.
Would we stay here again. YES.
