“Just the right distance from The Crowd”
Reviewed May 19, 2014

We booked this hotel for a 3 night stay after looking at the reviews. Also one of the major attractions was on site car parking. However there are 16 rooms but only enough parking for approx. 8 cars in the designated bays. You can park 3 cars in-line along the internal wall but you could stand the chance of being boxed in.

I was parked no 3 in line and was about to leave the hotel to go to the city when the room phone rang and I was asked if I could move my car as a group of residents were leaving, in their people carrier, and were boxed in. The vehicle was too wide to negotiate past mine. 5 mins later we would have been gone for the day, into the city, and they would have been stuck for the duration!!! So if in doubt, ask for a permit and park in the road outside in the designated areas.

On arrival we had a friendly welcome, we sat in the lounge, where we were instantly offered tea/coffee and a small delicious flapjack. We were informed about the hotel and it's amenities and the best way to walk to the city plus given a map and some literature.

Our room was No. 1 (Classic Queen Sized Double). It was well decorated, not overtly large, but adequate. Tea/coffee making facilities, bottled water, and a nice flat screen TV with the usual freesat stations. Other additions were a DVD player (you could borrow DVD's) and a hair dyer.

The bed was one of the most comfortable we have slept in and there was no noise, during the night, both internally & externally.

En suite shower room with instant hot water was very clean however the wash hand basin was set rather on the low side so was difficult when cleaning teeth/shaving as you had to stoop to use the basin effectively. This is not a criticism of our stay but an observation.

Breakfast was very good, I availed myself of the cooked breakfast and it was served relatively quickly and piping hot with good quality ingredients. They did not serve it with beans, which was good for me as I am not a fan of baked beans, (get sick of having to say no beans when I go elsewhere)

Service was always with a smile with friendly and attentive staff.

There was an issue when we arrived, as due to an earlier internal water leak, the ground floor ceiling had collapsed in a small section at the foot of the stairs. Due to Health and Safety grounds the staircase was closed off at this point. There would have only been one flight of stairs to negotiate to get to our room, however we had to go to the rear staircase which took us to the 2nd floor the we had to walk down another flight to get to our room.

There were copious apologies re this, but it was not their fault it was a circumstance that prevailed at the time and we were able to get around the issue. It did not detract from our stay.

I ordered champagne for the room on arrival and it was duly in place. All we had to do was let reception know when we wanted to drink it and they changed the 'display' bottle for one straight out of the fridge in an ice bucket. There is a PC with wifi in the lounge.

It is a 10 min walk (downhill) to the city centre but may take a little longer on the return (uphill), especially when you have been walking all day. But the hotel is ideally placed, far from the maddening crowds.

We did enquire at a couple of hotels in the city, on behalf of friends who wished to visit, re car parking and they stated no car parking you have to use the council run car parks nearby. So Oldfields wins by a mile on this aspect.

Would we stay here again. YES.

Room Tip: Room 1 could not fault except for low fitted wash Hand basin.

We spent one night recently at Oldfields with some friends for a break in the city and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. From our arrival to departure the service and accommodation were of a high standard and it is only 10-15 minutes walk to the city centre. Karen on reception was very friendly and helpful. Our breakfast was lovely, we all had the smoked salmon and scrambled egg, presented in a very nice and different way. We would highly recommend Oldfields if you are visiting Bath and would definitely return if we wanted a break in the city again.

We stayed in Bath to celebrate our friends 50th birthday and couldn't have chosen nicer accommodation. We received a lovely warm welcome and were offered a cup of tea/coffee in the lounge when we arrived (much appreciated after a long drive down). We were delighted with our room (no 9), it was spacious, with a very comfortable bed and nice views over Bath. Tea and coffee facilities are provided in the room.

We enjoyed a full English breakfast on both mornings of our stay. Fresh fruit, yoghurt and cereals are also available for you to help yourself to. The staff on duty were very friendly and service was good.

It's an easy 10 minutes walk downhill into Bath and caused us no problems. Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths are highly recommended and well worth a visit. We dined at Jamie Oliver's Italian restaurant on the Saturday evening (having reserved a table in advance) and had a wonderful meal.

We would thoroughly recommend Oldfields House if you are visiting Bath!

Arrived early and instantly offered a cup of tea (plus biscuits)
Clean room with large comfy bed.
Fun bathroom/jacuzzi bath.
Nice view over city.
Key tag comes with fob that allows money off certain local attractions/dining.
The lovely staff topped it all off.
Well worth a look.

My husband and I stayed here from 27th to 29th April and had a lovely time. We were In room 6 which is a loft room, not the most spacious but it was more than comfortable. Everything we need was in the room, the facilities were great. The staff were very friendly and accommodating when we checked in and at breakfast in the morning, food was great, piping hot and cooked to perfection!. The walk into Bath is pretty quick, about 10 to 15 minutes as down hill. The walk back not so good especially when its pouring down with rain!!

Well worth staying here, parking and breakfast was included in the price so added bonus!

Room Tip: Room 6 is good, but if your tall you wont like it as pretty compact.

We booked into Oldfields House for three nights from 14th April. Our room was pleasant, the bed comfortable and clean. On retiring to bed we could not only hear the sound from a television but the incessant noise of an extractor fan. The Reception closed at 9 p.m. hence there was no response to dialling "0" nor to pressing the bell at Reception. Returning to our room we knocked on the door of the room marked 'Private'. The Resident Manager, Barbara Bentley, responded somewhat grumpily. We explained the situation of the dual noise which made sleep impossible. She stated her husband thought the fan noise was from their bathroom and that it would stop after five minutes. It did not although the television sound did. The next morning we spoke to Karen not only about the noise but the attitude of Mrs Bentley. We were allocated another room for the following two nights. There was never any apology from Mrs Bentley and her dismissive "well, these things happen" to my comment the episode had left a sour taste has done little for us to recommend the B&B. It is also worth noting that stale "man wee' can be removed from the base of toilet pans by the application of a small scrubbing brush and bleach water. Our last room requires that treatment. If anyone has a problem see Karen who also gave us a discount on our stay.

Room Tip: Check the thickness of the walls!

OLDFIELDS_MANAGEMENT, Manager at Oldfields House, responded to this review, May 19, 2014
As hoteliers, we all know that we must smile and assist, always, no matter what else is happening.

We’re sorry. On this occasion the happy smile was just one step too far. After yet another gruelling 10+ hour shift (and a 5:30am start coming up) we responded to a prolonged hammering on our door. We were able to establish that an adjoining bathroom had its light on and therefore its extractor fan (which shared an outlet vent with the guests’ room) was running. The light was turned off and the fan ceased 5 minutes later.

There was no evidence whatsoever of a “phantom” TV causing a disturbance.

The rest of this guest’s review oscillates between libel and defamation and, as such, will not be handled in this forum.

For those seasoned TripAdvisor members who are seeking accurate information on Oldfields House, we recommend reading the rest of our reviews and drawing your own conclusions.

Over the next couple of days, not only our staff, but also our other guests, rapidly came to the conclusion that it was going to be impossible to please Cliff and Penny Jones from Canterbury. Sadly, that conclusion proved to be true.
