We stayed at the Bath Priory for 3 nights in May 2014 while visiting family in the area, and I'm finding it really hard to know what to write about this hotel.
Let's start with the positives: Lovely old buildings; the gardens are truly SPECTACTULAR (our room had a nice balcony overlooking one of the gardens); the restaurant was very good (reviewed separately); afternoon tea was nice; we quite liked the location being a little bit out of the hustle & bustle of busy Bath; and the check-in/check-out processes were smooth & painless. But other than the gardens, where's the wow? For 440 pounds/night, we were expecting WOW.
On the down side: while the room/bed/bathroom were adequate, the couch was shabby - like, REALLY shabby - and even the carpet looked a little shabby. Much of the woodwork in the hallways looked like it could use a coat of paint, and while the staff were very responsive when we asked for something, we felt they were lacking in initiative. For example, on two separate occasions, we ordered room service and had to specifically ask the staff member to take the previous meal's dirty dishes with them - (literally, they had one foot out the door, and we had to call after them and say, "Could you please take that tray of dirty dishes WITH YOU - yes, the one you just walked past..."). One really shouldn't have to ask, should one?
We have stayed in lots of lovely hotels in all different parts of the world, and while this is certainly a very nice and unique spot, for the price that we paid, I think we should have had WOW.
