“Excellent location for shopping in Bath”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013

My husband and I stayed overnight in a superior double room. This was excellent with many period features and a genuine sense of luxury. The 5' walk into Bath meant the car was not needed so the free parking permit was a real bonus.

The garden was a late afternoon delight and provided a welcome retreat from the all day shopping. It was also a good opportunity to browse the collection of restaurant menus - a really useful guide. Hotel staff were extremely helpful and their flexibiity looking after bags etc meant the one night was in practice a two day trip. Many have mentioned the breakfast which exceeds the advance publicity. The flavours were outstanding, reflecting the quality of the ingredients used and a great atmosphere.

Some have written that the hotel is expensive - I disagree. You pay a fair price for a very high standard of accomodation, service, food and a great location. The better rooms are well worth the extra cost.

If you are looking for a 'dormity' - go elsewhere. If you want to be pampered but still have the flexibility to explore Bath's restaurants, it is ideal.

Room Tip: The superior doubles are much larger and more luxurious

We stayed one night. We were made to feel very special. Advice was offered in a quiet non pushy way but you knew nothing was too much trouble. Ambience and decor were perfect for the amazing Georgian setting of Bath. Room at the top of the house was small but very acceptable with wonderful sun drenched reflections off the Bath stone houses. Breakfast was a delectable array, displayed and served with a quiet efficiency, again we felt nothing was too much trouble for our delightful hostess. Highly recommended. As for us regular visitors to Bath , we will certainly return to this haven of perfection!
Our only recommendation would be a little background gentle music in the dining room to fill the silence! Thank you for a special stay.

We had a wonderful stay at the Kennard. Hosts very helpful, hotel has bags of charm and character. A delicious breakfast served in a lovely breakfast room, great choice of teas, coffees, condiments. The £100 per night charge for the two of us b&b is very fair for Bath. Overall I would definitely return and can't wait to visit again.

Room Tip: Room at the top of the hotel a touch small but didn't bother us really.

Just returned from a few days in Bath and would definitely recommend The Kennard. Their breakfasts are excellent - cooked just the way you want, You have a choice of numerous cereals and fresh fruit salad as well as a choice of 9 different types of tea, 2 Tissanes, 5 fruit teas, 8 different types of coffee and hot chocolate. The only problem is deciding what to have. It is a short walk to the centre of Bath and all the attractions - you couldn't wish for a better place. Nothing is too much bother for Mary and Giovanni - you just have to ask for anything you want.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Garden Room overlooking the garden which was delightful.

We stayed in Bath for one night on the way to Cornwall. The Kennard is perfectly located in the Pilteney Bridge area, very close to the city centre and all attractions. It is a wonderful place decorated with lots of taste. Mary and Giovanni are very friendly hosts and they work hard to make this place comfortable for their guests. Breakfast was absolutely delicious with a great choice of food and drinks. I would definitely plan to stay there when next time in Bath and would highly recommend this place.

The Kennard is well reviewed and this was the prime reason for us selecting this small hotel rather than one of the larger ones in Bath. To start with the positive points, the breakfasts are impressive in terms of the range of choices and the quality of the locally sourced products used; the decor of the hotel is of a high standard and the location is ideal for close access to central Bath and sightseeing. On the negative side, the rooms do not have air conditioning - if you happen to stay there during a hot spell (as we did) then the temperature in the room is insufferable - a floor-standing fan is supplied but all this happened to achieve was moving the hot air around. We stayed three nights and did not manage to get one good night's sleep. We were put into one of the "attic" rooms which we found a little claustrophobic - with two of you in the room you had to dance around each other if you needed to move within the room. From the breakfast room to our room there were 83 steps - so if you happen to have any physical ailments then accessing the room would be somewhat of a challenge. Even in such a small room, to have a tiny television screen mounted on the wall is not great. Finally, the cost of staying at the Kennard is not cheap - we were paying £130 per night for this small, overheated room. When one compares the price of staying at the Kennard with one of the larger hotels in Bath (as we did) which offers larger rooms with many more facilities then it does not represent good value for money.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are glad that you appreciated our breakfast. We take great care in sourcing our mainly local and organic products - even our ketchup is organic! We are also pleased that you appreciated our location - so central, yet at the same time quiet - and our tasteful decor.
It is true that we do not have air-conditioning - we have never advertised that we have it - and neither do the great majority of guesthouses in Bath. Since buying The Kennard in 2006, we have never experienced such hot weather as this year.
The Kennard is a historic city-centre townhouse (Grade 1 listed) with a lot of stairs - we are sorry they were too much for you - but we always offer the service of carrying our guests' luggage up to the rooms on arrival and on departure, as we did in your case. We also have rooms on lower floors. So our suggestion is to reserve your room directly with us and not through third-party sites, so we are able to satisfy your specific requirements.
We do not accept that your room was small - nearly 16 sqm - but for guests who require more space, we have larger rooms which we call Superior.
About value for money, we are certain that with our Standard Double rooms at £130 at weekends and £110 mid-week, inclusive of full English breakfast, parking permit and free wifi, we are extremely competitive on the Bath market. As for the larger hotels, the Holiday Inn Express in Bath (located on our busy ring-road, in front of a petrol-station and next to a cemetery) is 15-20% more expensive than us, and certainly does not offer the service we provide, for example, in your case suggesting and reserving the restaurants which, judging from the other reviews you left on this site, you greatly enjoyed.
Kind regards,
Giovanni & Mary

In May 2013, I returned to Bath for a few days, this time with a friend who had never been to the UK before. And while I'd never stayed at The Kennard before, I love the area around the Pulteney Bridge. I was delighted to learn that they had vacancies ... and even more delighted when we arrived.

Gracious and hard-working hosts Mary and Giovanni make the stay memorable. The rooms are each uniquely designed with rich fabrics and antiques, clean and comfortable. We enjoyed a view of the lovely garden. And the breakfasts were among the best we'd enjoyed in the two weeks we were touring England (homemade oatmeal, fresh-squeezed orange juice, locally sourced sausage and bacon, outstanding eggs any way you want them). Being just across the Pulteney Bridge, too, meant that we were in an ideal location for wandering the city (which can have some hilly sections) while being close enough to the train station to come and go (we did a daytrip out to Salisbury and Stonehenge).

Would definitely recommend The Kennard to anyone visiting this historic and beautiful city!

Room Tip: While the street isn't a noisy one, you might want to choose a room overlooking the back garden...
