“Not good!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2012

This was a cheap hotel but not good, the shower was dirty and had mildew around it, there was also mould on the ceiling in the bedroom, apart from this the bedroom was clean, a nice view over Bath but the cleanliness made this disappointing! Breakfast again a let down my husband had mouldy bread! Also the two flights of stairs was a long way to take heavy bags of luggage. The staff were pleasant enough, also the city centre was a quick 15 minute walk downhill but the way back was a very steep walk uphill! It's a shame to see such a lovely building not being maintained or modernised.

We first got a room downstairs which had an adjoining sunroom that looked over the garden and pool. The sunroom was furnished in 70s style, but not in a funky way! The bedroom and bathroom was ok, a bit dark though, and the toilet didn't flush very well, which is a problem we have found in many English and European hotels...what is it with bad plumbing! The furnishings were a tad shabby, but I've seen worse. Bed was ok. We asked to stay another night as all other accommodation in the area was booked out. We were moved to another room upstairs which was actually a lot nicer, brighter and the furnishings were more tasteful and looked newer. I think it was a superior double room and we weren't charged a higher rate, so that was appreciated. There was a stain on the ceiling and no remote for the TV but we could live with that. No view from the window except of a roof, though the view from the bathroom window was pretty! There's free parking on site which is a bonus and free wifi. Breakfast is also included. It's a bit of a hike to central Bath. We had a car but parking can be difficult during the day in the city. There are buses nearby the hotel that can take you into town. Walking to town was easy, but getting back not so much as you have to walk up a very steep street. Good exercise I suppose! For the price, it's an ok choice as Bath is expensive. I don't think it's as bad as some reviews here have made out.

We arrived at Wentworth House and went to book in. Immediately we realised that this hotel was
shabby and dirty. It advertises a restaurant and we were told that there would be no meals Saturday or Sunday as the chef couldn,t make it. Also we were told that they had only just started offering meals again after a substantial break but didn,t bother to change the advertisement on the internet. We went to the bedroom and I was shocked at the dirtiness and overall state of the room. Please do not be mislead with the pictures on the Internet as it isn't anything like what you see. We went out and immediately booked into The Old Maltings which was a hundred times better than this doss house.

Another negative review to add to the collection below I'm afraid.

Reasonably attractive building from the outside, but inside the decor felt like a collision of stale Victorian furnishings and 1970's Soviet interior design. The owner had all the charm and usefulness of a nail bomb. The bedroom: asked for a double but provided with an almost apologetic looking twin, but at least the beds were comfy. Also home to a sink in the corner, the hallmark of inadequacy. My girlfriend was delighted with the selection of channels on the tv, but very little else.

The bathroom across the corridor (shared with others) smelt like it had been cleaned with a chloride and warfarin, and not very well at that. So off-putting was the smell that sampling the shower (my favourite part of any mini break) was postponed indefinitely. Unremarkable breakfast.

The hotel seems to emanate an air of smugness - it's as if it knows that you have parted with a hundred quid for the dubious pleasure of staying within its walls. Would recommend an (any) alternative if you're a young couple looking for a romantic break away, unless you like inflicting disappointment on each other.

I have always believed that the best critic is yourself. I must admit I was worried about staying after reading so many negative reviews. However our stay was very enjoyable. On arrival the manager made us welcome and asked if we would be staying for dinner and informed us that the evening meal service had been recently re-introduced.

Our room was spotless, the bathroom was very clean and everything appeared to be working. Breakfast was really nice and I prefer making my own toast rather than having cold toast served from the kitchen. The cooked breakfast was well cooked and we only had to wait ten minutes after ordering. There was plenty of fresh fruit and cereals available along with yogurt and cereal bars. The room was cleaned everyday and the bed was made and fresh towels were provided.

Minor complaints the plumbing needs sorting out mainly the shower which had a mind of its own, it kept stopping for no reason. The toilet seat needed holding up which made the aim a bit of a challenge. The other thing was the lack of a comfy chair to sit on, we had a dining table chair to sit on.

Yes the place could do with a lick of paint but I found none of the previous complaints listed evident. The wife did complain of a strange smell in the room it turned out be her hand gel. There was plenty of parking if others parked properly. The location was perfect and took about 15 minutes to get to the city centre. The walk back up hill could be a challenge if you are not very fit, but the hotel provided a sheet with bus numbers if you were not up to the walk.

Our stay worked out at about £85 per night for bed and breakfast which is very good value. If you treat the place as a base then Wentworth House is ideal. If you are looking for more then you will be disappointed I suggest you pay a lot more and stay at a more up market venue.

Often when loking for places to stay i check out the facilities first then then price and often compare if the place in my eyes is worth it. Unfortunaly the promise of wswimming pool and hot tub were not quite as they seemed when i stayed. First impression is the photos shown lead you to believe it is a hotel off the beaten track when in reality its on the side of a quite bust road with not much on site parking and not as secure as i would like. We were welcomed inside and straight away offered a free upgrade! so we were quite plesed then when we got in to the room were surprised to see a 4 poster bed! Then we sat on it and well it groaned creaked i though it was going to fall apart..lol The room itslef really was too small to accomidate this bed it practically had no floor space left, the decor was erm mismatched and was to say the least dated and very tired, with some evidance of water leaking still present on the ceiling, the bathroom was tiny with a single cubical shower, an ill fitting toilet seat and some cracked tiles and sink, it really didn't make you feel at ease with using it. I remeber looking for the pool which to my surpise was full of green water with he gardens under going so building re-landscaping and then the price list to use the free hot tub i think at around £6pp phour yet it mentioned as being free on the wbsite when we booked, didnt really matter though as the building works went under way they were all out of action. The breakfast was tasty and buffet style for cerials and toast, the cooked meal itself was quite minimul and for a little enterainment on one of our mornings there someone jammed too much bread in to the toaster (no supervision) and set off the fire alarm. Infact we only ever saw two members of staff, 1 on the day we checked in and the other on the day we checked out.

Room Tip: Check to make sure or facilities and prices you may need to pay to use them.

We have just returned from a midweek mini break at Wentworth House. We booked, and then read the reviews so I was very nervous driving in! My initial impression as driving in was that the house had character. When stepping inside, I felt the decor was quirky and full of character and life! The gentlemen who was looking after us during our stay was exceptionally charming and pleasant, extremely polite and professional and made just the right amount of conversation with us! The room itself was interesting, I want to use the word quirky here again! It was tastefully decorated, and I think we had one of the cheaper rooms. The shower was cold, however we learnt if you leave the hot water tap running in the sink, the shower gets hot also!
Breakfast was delicious with a huge variety, and all good quality products, and you eat in a conservatory overlooking the lovely garden and pool.
Overall, I found the place to be a charming little gem! It was close to the centre of Bath, although painful walking back at night up that hill! I'm surprised it has been rated only 2 stars, I'd give it a higher rating, the charming helpful gentleman provided us with 5 star service!
If I come back to Bath I will definitely come here again!
