My husband and I visited last Saturday to see this glorious exhibition of Jacobean paintings ad costume. It is only small but the paintings are large and well lit and the details of the costumes were magnificent. Well informed staff. Great small museum with comfortable modern cafe serving excellent food. Well done!

Plus staff had been outside to erect a large snowman, complete with carrot for nose, banana for mouth and, I think, olives for eyes. We experienced the quality fare in the cafe but snow affected volunteers getting in and, thus, missed the guided tour... A return tomorrow is intended. Note the small shop only stocks quality items.

My parents live across the road from the museum, and so we went a couple of times. One of these was for a dreadful "light show", which I won't bore you with the details, suffiice to say don't take a stride out of your way to visit. However, the museum itself, and its very plesant cafe, are well worth stopping by. It provides a fasciinating insight into the life and times of Bath and the surrounding area. What makes a real difference are the guides, who personally explain the exhibits, and the customs and times of the era. Sadly for the Holburne Museum, it requires a level 5-minute walk across the Pulteney Bridge, which seems to put off many tourists, who seem more confortable restricting their visits to Bath to the Abbey and the Baths themselves. It's a shame as the museum is a nice, low-key way to spend an hour or two if you have time.

The lovely building provides a focal point as you walk up Great Pulteney Street. The paintings are beautifully displayed in recently re-furbished rooms. Pride of place goes to the Gainsborough portraits of wealthy visitors or inhabitants of Bath: for the lovely landscapes and trees. Helpful staff (attendant telephoned downstairs to ask where the Turner was - being restored).
Excellent cafe with fine views of the gardens and Christmas installation of maze of lights.
Well-stocked bookshop.
Useful off-street parking available.
