Owner description: One of only three bridges in the world lined with shops, this exquisite 18th-century bridge is one of the most admired structures in Bath.

The shops on the bridge give it its character. First look at it from the Empire side then walk across it and down the wide regency street (I think Great Pultney Street). We didn't have to imagine the Jane Austen costumes as many ladies in period dress were in Bath that day.
On the Great Pultney street side on the left notice the chapel were the great 19th century preacher William Jay preached for 60 years

We had never seen a bridge that had shops built on it. When on the bridge one did not even realise that it was a bridge, although you could see right through some of the shops to the water below, they are quite small shops. I saw a shop there with the biggest meringues I have ever seen. Taking a photo of the bridge from the banks of the canal makes for a lovely snap.

The Pulteney Bridge is quite photogenic from some distance away, standing on the banks of the river. If you are on the bridge, itself, it's indistinguishable from any other street--the shops just happen to be on a bridge. Bring your camera.
