Today the Assembly Rooms may be hired for a range of events such as weddings, dinners, conferences, meetings, exhibitions, concerts and parties. The world renowned Fashion Museum is situated on the lower ground floor and is open 363 days a year.

I have visited the Assembly Rooms on many occasions. The rooms are magnificent but you may be disappointed. On several occasions some of the rooms have been closed due to private functions or events going on. Whilst I am lucky to live fairly close by to visit again, I can imagine for visitors who have travelled a great distance it is frustrating. Plus you still pay the full price for a ticket whilst not being able to see all of the attraction.
On my last visit before Christmas I was hoping to meet a friend in the cafe and was told I had to purchase a ticket to the Assembly Rooms to use the cafe? This was disappointing and perhaps should be looked into?

Thank you for your review of the Assembly Rooms. The rooms are indeed closed for public access when we have private events such as weddings and conferences taking place and we are very clear in all publicity that this may be the case. It isn't practicable to put advance notice of closures on our website however we can certainly give notice up to 1 week ahead if you are able to contact us in advance next time you wish to visit. The Fashion Museum always remains open.

With regards to access the cafe, it is common practice to restrict access to all areas beyond the point of entry at most venues and atractions where an admission fee is charged. The Assembly Rooms is no different in this respect.

Gorgeous old rooms and as a Jane Austen fan was so exciting to walk in a room where she did. Part of it was closed when I went though because of a wedding.

With about 30 others I went on a coach trip from Swanage organised by the Purbeck Association of the National Trust only to find that the tea room and the Assembly Rooms were closed due to a conference. The National Trust should put its members first before making a quick profit. They must have other places that they can hold conferences especially at this time of year when many properties are closed to the public.

Having said this there was an excellent fashion show in the basement with clothes dating from the 18th Century, including some of Queen Victoria's mourning dresses. The staff were very helpful and lent us audio devices which described each exhibit.

The Assembly Rooms are in a pleasant location close to the Royal Circus.

If you are interested in Jane Austen and the regency era you should tick that on your must do list. The ballrooms are in great condition, the staff is friendly and the price is worth ist. The best thing is that the Assembly rooms are not overrunned by tourists. Take the chance and also visit the fashion museum which is in the same building. They have a great collection of antique fashion.

Great historic setting, pianist and excellent food. We chose the champagne afternoon tea. We were very tempted by the Celebration version which comes with 4 glasses of different Pommery champagne but decided it might interfere with our ability to walk in a straight line!
