“Elegant and Comfortable”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

The Bath Spa Hotel retains the elegance associated with Bath.

We have visited for several years and have always found the staff pleasant and helpful ,without being intrusive. The bedrooms are clean and comfortable, even if now somewhat dated. The beds are large and comfortable. The Imperial suites are ideal for celebrating a special occasion, with a separate sitting room with fire being particularly nice for a winter booking.

The breakfast service had failed for a little time, but now is again up to scratch and the breakfast choices are varied and plentiful. The portion sizes at dinner were just right, however, although the choices are suitable for most requirements and the quality of the ingredients are generally good, a couple of daily imaginative 'specials' would make the choice less mundane, especially for those staying for more than one night. The service from the head waiter was very good, however, there was a delay in delivering wine to the table and a portion of bread from the trolley was offered only once.

During our stay there was a hotel wide loss of all BBC channels which had not been rectified by the time we had left. From a marketing point of view, there is an extra £5 car park charge, which I think should just be included in the bill rather than making it a separate item, which, considering the grade of hotel, appears rather mean. If someone arrives without a car, when they are asked if they have brought a car, a nice touch would then be to deduct it from the bill.

The hotel has a nice spa with a heated outdoor pool (for adults).

There is an art gallery within easy walking distance of the hotel, but it is quite a walk into the centre of town for the rest of the attractions and a taxi may be required.

This continues to be one of our favourite hotels and I hope that we shall continue to return there for many years.

Room Tip: To get a good view out over the city of Bath, ask for one of the rooms and the front of the hotel. T...

Have just returned from a 3 day break with my daughter at the Macdonald Spa hotel and we really enjoyed it. The spa was excellent and the hotel very comfortable with staff ready to help us in every way. Having said that, we didn't eat in the hotel mainly because of the negative reviews and also because it suited us to wander out into Bath each evening. It was a great stay, however it was mainly the spa facilities that prompted me to write this positive review.

Stayed for a two night break in March 2013. Arrival was great, the concierge staff very helpful and checking in was friendly and easy. The room we were put in was quite small considering how much we had paid, but the views over the garden were lovely.
The hotel spa facilities were great and we spent lots of time in the outdoor pool as the water was so warm.
We decided not to eat evening dinner at the hotel as the heating in the restaurant had broken down, Bath has lots to offer though and found a superb local restaurant called Sotto Sotto.
I have to say we slept very well in a very comfortable bed.
Breakfast the next morning was poor value for the cost.
Overall a nice trip away but very expensive. Would not rate it 5 star though (except for the Spa area), probably more 3-4 star at best... the prices should be dropped to reflect this if I were to consider staying again.

Spent the Easter weekend at the Bath Spa with friends which on reflection turned out to be a rather frustrating and contradictory experience.
First impressions are very good. An elegant Hotel in lovely gardens, the welcome is first rate with friendly, helpful and attentive staff eager to help. Our room was very nice, both it and the en suite being well appointed and spotlessly clean with our luggage delivered promptly to our room.
The Spa is a nice place for a post commute relax. Dined out in Bath on our first night and returned to a nicely turned down room for a comfortable nights sleep.

Breakfast was OK, though the elegant dinning room was on the cool side it has to be said.
Returned after a day wandering Bath to our room at (circa 17.00) to discover the room surprisingly unserviced. After drinks we went for dinner which was of a reasonable standard, though the courses were punctuated by over long waits and the room still cool. Returned to our room to find it still unserviced and devoid of milk and coffee.
On checking out we expressed our disappointment at reception and were told that our comments would be passed on. Not really the response we were expecting.
Overall, this standard of service is not commensurate with £300 per night ! Our stay had positives, but on the whole there were far too many negatives. Management, get your finger out !

We stayed for 2 nights over Easter booking a double room including breakfast. Hotel rooms are in need of updating and our queen bed was made up of two single beds pushed together which dipped in the middle.

Door staff were a little too attentive when you didn't need their help, and on the one occasion we did, they were nowhere to be seen! Service at breakfast was good, but the hot option on both mornings was closer to cold than hot, although the plates were red hot so not sure what happens to the food!

We used the spa facilities which were nice but I have seen better, especially in five star hotel resorts.

Basically this is a nice hotel that needs some general updating, and shouldn't be rated as five star in our opinion. Definitely worth a visit if you can get a good rate like we did, but I wouldn't pay full price.

I went with the other half for Valentines day 2013 and this was meant to be a special treat. The room looked like any room would in a 3star hotel and was not comfortable. The bathroom looked cheap and the flooring dirty. The overpriced stay did not include breakfast and it appears that the staff are very unfriendly and condescending in their attitudes when complaints were made about anything.
Whilst checking in the lady who was checking in was indifferent, I had heard her speak to the customers being very nice and informing her about car parking etc, however when checking us in, we had not been told anything about where to park our car even though staff were aware we drove in. Leaving the complex at night was hard as you need a parking card to come out and go in, and we had not been given this, so we had to press the button to ask to be let in.
The spa is beautiful and has amazing pools and rooms but staff are rather indifferent here too not giving us spa slippers and robes and as we noticed other people were being given them we had to ask.
I would definitely not recommend this resort for a romantic break its beautiful and has beautiful gardens and spas but staff are indifferent and the room decor can barely count as 3 star let alone the 5 star rating and price they seem to be commanding.

Room Tip: Unfortunately no tips the whole resort rooms appear rather ugly and plain and not 5 star quality.

We made a last minute booking at this hotel and payed just under £300 for one night. Thinking we'd paid well over the odds for one nights accommodation, I was more than miffed at the petty £5 parking charge. Really Macdonald Bath are you take desperate to take more from your 'guests' ?

We were shattered and really looking forward to getting to our room. It was a disappointment. The bed might be one of the most uncomfortable I have ever stayed in, it was so soft both my husband and I woke up with achey backs. It was also more like a large single than a double bed. The room was freezing, the temp controls didn't work. The walls were so thin you could hear everything from the neighbouring rooms, not pleasant to hear drunk people returning after a night out.

The spa was great, especially the outdoor pool.

Breakfast. The food was good. Service a little lacking.

Would I stay again? No way, not even at a third of the price.

Room Tip: Don't go for the 'garden level' feels like you're in the bowels of the hotel!
