We were taken out for lunch by my grandmother and had the most wonderful meal in the restaurant in the basement of the hotel. The menu was small but fabulous and each of the courses were beautifully presented and tasted fantastic. I'd really recommend a visit here to eat even if you are not staying in the hotel (which we weren't). It's also on one of the most beautiful streets in Europe - so you can walk off your lunch or supper afterwards. The sticky toffee pudding and early gray icecream were particularly delicious!

Dukes is a beautiful grade 1 listed building in the most wonderful street just a stones throw from the centre. The staff are extremely helpful and welcoming. The Cavendish restaurant serves gorgeous food (see separate review). We had a night in one of the suites and found the room to be very nice. A couple of things let it down. Firstly it has no lift, not a problem for a short stay, but I wouldn't like to "lug" a suitcase up and down to the second floor. In fairness the staff were almost insistent on carrying the suitcase up. The second point, maybe we were unlucky, but the wall down the side of the wash basin was covered in splashes, poor for a hotel of this standard, so it misses out on a top mark.

We had an almost perfect stay in this charming hotel, which is well situated for the main sights of Bath, and also for the Holbourne Art Museum, which is literally a hundred yards or so up the road.

We were upgraded to a lovely small suite with four poster, and found everything as it should be: lovely large fluffy towels, a heater for chilly autumn mornings, good toiletries, and room made up promptly. Staff behind the desk were friendly and helpful. One slight quibble is that breakfast was not included in the room rate (although it seems churlish to comment on this when we got a better room than we had expected). It was also rather inflexible, in that the price appeared to be 'all or nothing', so no reduction if you just want a continental breakfast. There are many small cafes within walking distance that offer a cheaper option however, and this was our choice on two of the three mornings.

Room Tip: If you have problems with steps book a ground floor room

We were drawn to Dukes by the restaurant reviews, looking for a venue for a small wedding lunch. As soon as I saw the private dining room I knew we had found the right place, and we took the opportunity to look at the rooms, and chose the Atholl , spacious and beautifully furnished with a four poster bed and a large bathroom with a huge bath and shower, plus fluffy white towels and robes.

Sayuri and Robert took over the lunch plans, and on the day the room and table looked so elegant everybody gasped as they went in. The guests had pre-ordered from the a la carte menu and the three courses were brought out correctly at exactly the right time. The quality of the food was outstanding, many people saying it was one of the best meals they had ever had.

The little courtyard was a perfect spot for pre-lunch drinks and photos.

Breakfast is served to order in the dining room, with an imaginative choice of alternatives to the full English, should you wish.

The only problem is wi-fi reception, which is patchy, but I heard that this was being upgraded the following week, and there is a PC and printer in reception you can use if necessary.

It is rated a 3* hotel, and I can only assume that is because it lacks some of the trimmings such as fitness centres and lifts, but take no notice of that - this is a 5* hotel in charm, decor, location and friendliness. Look no further.

We stayed at the Dukes as phase 2 of our anniversary week - three nights in total.

We haven't been back for a while and realised just how much we'd missed it - we stayed in the Beaufort Suite which was PERFECT... so quiet, clean and comfortable.

The location of the hotel is excellent, just literally a few minutes and you're in the centre of beautiful Bath.

Mike at the Dukes was fantastic as always - so polite and courteous and willing to help in any way he can - a true credit to the hotel.

We are totally in love with Bath and also totally in love with the Dukes Hotel - it's a perfect combination and we will be back very soon!
