“Lovely hotel in great location”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

We picked the Queensbury as it was the best hotel in Bath as rated on TripAdvisor that didn't want silly money for a room and our choice was rewarded by one of the nicest hotel rooms we have stayed in for many a year. Our stay started with a very warm welcome at reception from the excellent staff and the seamless (and very cheap for a city centre) valet parking service. We were then shown up to the room at the top floor with excellent views across Bath and the outlying hills. The room itself had a lovely super king size bed, large wardrobe, free water, nice toiletries, excellent shower and a large sofa on which to relax (and our room is apparently one of the smaller rooms in the hotel).

The location is good also (albeit only if you don't mind a little bit of a hill), being positioned within reasonable distance of both the city centre and the Royal Crescent.

So why not a 5 star review? The hotel would lose a point for 3 main reasons. Firstly the heating in the room was centrally controlled and thus could not be turned on the night it was needed after a drop in temperatures and some heavy rain but was on full blast the next day when it was warmer and drier. Secondly, the repeated references to being a "preferred customer" if you book direct (we didn't as we saved £30 by using an agent) left us feeling a little 2nd class and finally no wifi in the rooms even though the hotel itself does have it is a bit poor in 2013.

So all in all a great hotel and I would return but there are a couple of very minor points to address

Just got back from a lovely stay in this hotel

We had been to Bath before but had always stayed in a B@B and usually near the train station area of Bath. This time as I was celebrating my birthday, we decided to treat ourselves and stay here. I was attracted by their website and the quirky character of it and also having read all the reviews on here. I also took note of booking direct rather than through any of the discount websites and am very glad that I did, as was presented with the VIP card on arrival. This was used almost immediately as having had a horrible journey weather wise arriving from London late on a Friday night I was able to try the cocktail of the week at a 20percent discount! That and the fact that the hotel using their valet parking service meant the stress of finding parking late at night in Bath in horrible weather was removed completely! And at £5 for the privilege which covered our whole stay (Friday night through to Sunday afternoon) I think was pretty good value !!

Our room was at the back and was in fact the cheapest available and was absolutely fine and just what was required. No noise at all apart from the bathroom above us which although annoying at first, we got used to. If staying again we would upgrade, but as I said it was absolutely fine and did not really bother us.

Location wise it was great as we had wanted to visit the top end of Bath and being so close to the Jane Austen centre during this festival week.

Breakfasts in the Olive tree restaurant were really good and such a variety.

Coffee and tea in the lounge was a nice touch particularly when returning to the hotel which is uphill from most trips

And when checking out the valet service really pays as you simply wait for your car to be brought to you and you simply drive away... No stress at all!

Staff very friendly and whole atmosphere very relaxed

All in all a super stay in a really good and friendly boutique hotel.

The staff and service was wonderful. They were friendly and always available to answer any questions. The rooms were clean and a good size. Paying for the parking is well worth it. Parking is very hard to find there. The only thing I would down grade them on was the restaurant staff was not very customer friendly. They were a little snooty.

We spent a few nights in this hotel and I am not sure what we are missing looking at the other reviews on TA.

Breakfast was disappointing. We were the first people there for breakfast on the Sunday morning. My seat had crumbs on it and there were salad leaves on the floor at my feet when we sat down. Clearly the restaurant was not cleaned properly for breakfast after dinner the night before. I ordered soft boiled eggs: they arrived with cracked shells (with water leaking into the egg) and hard - rather inedible. It is also rather strange that when my husband asked for brown sauce, the waiter dished up a number of spoonfuls on his plate - a bit like a mother to a child. It was far more than what he'd ever wanted in the first place, so a waste and a somewhat annoying.

The rooms are comfortable, but it can be very hot and there are no air-conditioners in the rooms. As the weather wasn't particularly warm while were in Bath, we didn't think it was going to be a problem, but the rooms tend to bake and became uncomfortably hot in the afternoons - it might be nice in winter, but definitely not in summer.

There is some foot traffic at night with screams and shouts from party-goers returning home, although we realise that the hotel can't do much about that.

Coffee and tea making facilities are not available in the room, rather they are made available in the lounge. However there is a curfew and at 5.30pm they are taken away (perhaps because the bar opens). I would have liked to have had a cup of coffee when we returned from dinner in the city however that would cost extra.

The front office staff of the hotel is friendly, but we found the atmosphere in the restaurant stiff and uncomfortable. The wifi services are only operational on the ground floor; surely internet access in rooms is a given in a five star hotel these days?

On the upside, the car parking, the bed and the shower (over the bath) were good.

All in all, we expected more and will find other accommodation in Bath in future.

I struggled when looking for hotels located in the centre of Bath as they were all too grand (and old fashioned) or too basic (there's a time and a place for Travel lodge!) So the Queensberry was perfect. Walking distance of the centre (though up hill on return), very courteous staff but not 'snobbish' clean and tidy furnishings throughout and very comfortable rooms, every thing you would want from a hotel done very well. Recommend the valet parking because I think it would be tricky and possibly costly not to use it.

Room Tip: The rooms higher up and south-east facing (towards town) have good views, I can't imagine any ro...

My wife and I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights, the staff were fantastic from the moment we arrived outside in our car. We had just got out of our car and a staff member came out to confirm we wanted our car parked and took our luggage, truly excellent service.

We did not have a evening meal in the restaurant but we did have breakfast both days and the food was excellent and the again the staff we excellent, both attentive and friendly.

The room we had was on the top floor, it was very spacious and clean.

Location wise the hotel is a mere 10 mins walk from the town center yet it is very quiet around the hotel, excellently placed for a visit to Bath.

We would definitely stay here again.

We have stayed here many times before due to the excellent location, good service, and nice restaurant. Our stay this time was pleasant but the room (29) was not decorated in the same elegant style as the rest of the hotel being a mustard yellow/olive green combo. The bathroom however was large and the room itself comfortable and overlooked a bit of the garden and was quiet. Service was good and the meal in the Olive Tree was excellent but a bit overpriced. We didnt try breakfast as there are so many great cafes - try Same Same But Different a few minutes walk away. As mentioned there is no tea/coffe in the room which is not an issue for us as it was available downstairs if needed.
