I have always thought I may lay claim to making the best Sunday roast known to man, and although I didn't boast about it, It felt good. Having eaten Sunday lunch at The Chequers with my Mum and husband last week, I am defeated. We all agreed it was a notch up from my own. Sigh. We drooled as plates were delivered to the other tables but didn't have to wait long. Mum and I had beef (not the sharing roast; next time maybe) and husband had the lamb shank. All meats were melty and perfect, veg was incredible, perfectly cooked and varied and the Yorkshire puds had not only that lovely (i.e. massive!) shape and crunchy texture but a superb flavour that I've never achieved despite years of trying! Great location (what's not to love about Bath?), nice decor, good atmosphere and great staff. But to be honest, you could serve this food in a leaky tent in the rain with a naked John McCririck as head waiter and I'd still queue overnight. I'm drooling writing this...perfect and can't wait to go back.
