Downstairs looks like a Georgian pub whilst upstairs you sit in a room with large sash windows and carpet on the floor - it had a cosy elegant feel.

Service is great and the food was lovely - we had a Sunday roast - beef and lamb shank whilst Louis had fish and chips.

It's always busy so you'll need to book.

That was certainly the impression that we got. Upon arrival we were informed that our table was not yet ready so we happily propped up the bar and soaked up the lively atmosphere in the main bar. After quite a long wait we were then taken upstairs to what can only be described as The Room of Whispers, or possibly The Room for Tourists. You could hear a pin drop as it was 3/4 empty - making our wait all the more more confusing. After several complaints to the staff we were finally allowed to go downstairs and re-join the atmosphere - but only after our starters had been served upstairs. We had booked well in advance via the website and there was no indication that we'd be banished upstairs. We were also far from convinced that all the tables downstairs had been booked in advance. We certainly got the impression that the downstairs was for locals-only

That said - the food was, at times, excellent. Starters of pickled mackerel with salmon mousse and pigeon breast with smoked pork belly were both delicious (although the pigeon dish was far too big for a starter). Mains of plaice on the bone and open chicken pie were OK and excellent respectively.

I'm sure the locals love eating here but from the perspective of a weekend tourist I would suggest you try elsewhere (it wasn't cheap either)

Went to the Chequers to celebrate my husband's birthday and we had a wonderful evening. The staff were helpful and polite and the whole atmosphere of the place was warm and friendly. The quality of the food was fantastic, beautifully presented and tasted amazing! Would totally recommend and look forward to visiting again.

Great food and great atmosphere. Surely will not be long until Michelin give this place a star. We did not have a reservation but were seated quickly and found the service to be very good.

What makes this place stand out is it's fantastic food which showed great imagination and fantastic fusion of complex flavours.

Highly recommend it, I'm going back very soon to try Sunday lunch

I've previously given the Chequers a very good review and I do still like it but have recently noticed that some things are going awry. I went with seven friends and they asked us to pre-order food, which is fair enough for a large group; however, our portion sizes varied widely depending on what dish we chose. The three most expensive meals we ordered (hake with chorizo, red pepper and cassoulet) were really stingy portions - the fish (which the waiter unwittingly admitted was actually cod and not the hake we had ordered) was a 2" square, thin fillet served beside slices of chorizo and 3 halves of roasted cherry tomato and a separate lidded ramekin of cassoulet. This perhaps wouldn't have been so embarrassing for me as the person who suggested going to the Chequers if everyone else's meals hadn't been twice the size. The three of us felt really quite cheated, especially as we were paying the most.

On the other hand the food was all very tasty and the atmosphere of the Chequers is friendly and relaxed - but I really think they need to be more reliable. This seemed very underhand and money-grabbing.
