“A Wonderful Stay”
Reviewed April 12, 2007

A friend and I chose Bath as our base while in England to attend a friend's wedding. We chose Three Abbey Green primarily because of the great reviews on this website. We were so pleased with this B&B: it is beautiful, clean, well-maintained and the location is more than ideal. They also serve a very good breakfast from cereals to eggs, sausages, and smoked salmon. The Roman Bath, Pump Room, shopping, Thermae Spa (wonderfully relaxing!), and restaurants are so close you can walk to them in 1 - 2 minutes' time! Sue, Nici and Derek are wonderful hosts and incredibly helpful. I'd definitely stay at Three Abbey Green again when I go back to Bath (a magnificently beautiful city, indeed!)

My Husband and I stayed for two nights as I was running the Bath Marathon on the Sunday the 25th of March. We have not stopped raving about the Abbey Green since we come back. Sue and Derek made us feel very welcome, just home from home. The Abbey Green had a very warm atmosphere , the breakfast was first class , the location was ideal and we will definatley be going back.

Our arrival in Bath was a little chaotic at first, being from a small Island off the East Coast of Australia this was our first foray into restricted vehicle access streets. We had to park in the public carpark and haul our luggage through the lovely little cobblestone alleys until we found Abbey Green. First Impressions are a neat and tidy Heritage Townhouse building and we were warmly greeted at the front door by the owners. After being shown to our room my wife and I were gobsmacked by the lavish and tasteful interior which was all decorated in a period theme. Each of the Rooms in the Hotel are done in a different theme and I must say they have done a fantastic job. Our bed was a beautiful timber four poster and the view out the window to the green was truly romantic. That evening we explored a bit of Bath and the best and after scouring the pubs and restaurants we decided the best one to suit us was actually no more than a stones throw from the front door of the Hotel. In fact it was just on the opposite side of the Green. We had a wonderful meal and spent several hours chewing the ear off the wonderful barstaff and cheerful owner. We then retired back to our room and basked in the ambience, what a truly fantastic experience.

  • Liked — The beautiful rooms and friendly staff, and the pub/restaurant across the Green.

Derek and Sue are the professional, friendly and very helpful hosts of this excellent guest house, just a stone throw away from the Bath Abbey and the newly re-opened and refurbished baths.

Over the breakfast table (very clean, very generous and very prompt) we watched Derek and Sue look after the guests, often providing maps, advice and suggestions for enjoying a stay in Bath and the surrounding area.

The thing that struck me the most though was the way the hosts looked after their staff - you would hope hosts would look after their guests, and this they do, in spades - to see busy business owners treating employees with dignity and kindness beyond the call of duty was wonderful.

As a team, they provide great food, amazing, massive beds, well appointed rooms and bathrooms, and all this in the heart of the town.

We'll certainly stay there again, if we can.

My husband, my parents, and I stayed at Three Abbey Green in October for a week and were blown away by this charming guest house. Sue and Derek were helpful and friendly but not intrusive, and they and their staff kept us well fed and very comfortable. From offering itinerary suggestions to sending our clothes out to the laundry, they were able to care for our every need. The rooms were beautiful, spacious, and clean, and the quiet but central location is absolutely perfect. Walking out of the front door every day to see the abbey right there was such a treat! We will absolutely stay with them again.

Everything about 3 Abbey Green is first rate, from the hospitable welcome to the time of departure. The whole Georgian house is immaculately kept.
For a special treat we highly recommend the opulence of the Lord Nelson room with its brand new four-poster bed, comfortable sofa and chairs round a welcoming fire - luxury, beauty, warmth and a sense of history all under one roof! The view from the room onto the square is full of interest and quite lovely when the the magnificent central tree is in leaf. Needless to say the breakfast is excellent too....
The Abbey, the Roman baths, fascinating shops and good restaurants are on the doorstep of this delightful town house.
If you are new to Bath, Sue and Derek are only too willing to give you very helpful advice about the area to make your stay even more enjoyable. We really cannot fault this place and we are so looking forward to our next visit.

Three Abbey Green is a luxurious hotel that we would recommend to anyone. Not only was Sue helpful in getting us settled in, the Westwood Suite was very spacious, lovely decorations, lockable closet, and best of all, a separate chamber for my daughter to stay in, giving her some privacy from the parents :-).

The room was very clean, nicely arranged with sofa and chairs as well as large bed, and a clean and extremely large bathroom -- we could have fit another bed in there! The shower had very good water pressure, excellent tiling and bath doors, and a heated towel rack -- what luxury! The down comforter on the bed and the soft down pillows were a wonderful touch too; the most comfortable beds we had all trip.

Nici, who was my email contact and very accommodating in helping me decide which room to choose, was the best breakfast hostess -- my husband is vegan, and she and Sue went out of their way to ensure he didn't have to eat just toast and jam! They made a scrumptious fried mushroom & tomato (fried in oil, not butter) breakfast for him. I totally enjoyed the smoked salmon (with scrambled eggs one day, with toast the next) and croissants. This was the best breakfast we had this trip!

The location can't be beat; in the center of town, next door to the Abbey, Roman Bath, and Marks & Spencer, where we picked up a quick & inexpensive lunch before going on the 2pm walking tour (free -- no fee, no tipping!) of Bath. This was a great introduction to Bath, and we thoroughly enjoyed it -- thanks to Sue for letting us know about it :-)

I heartily recommend Three Abbey Green for couples on a romantic getaway, families with teenagers or any children for that matter, and anyone who wants the absolutely best place to stay in Bath. Thank you, Sue & Nici (Derek was away) for your hospitality, friendliness, and help in arranging our stay in Bath. We certainly hope we get a chance to stay again!

P.S. We also want to put in a plug for the Walrus & the Carpenter, run by Andrew Robinson -- he made my burger exactly the way I like them, and my daughter's as well; and was able to make a great vegan meal for my husband. We really enjoyed this little restaurant on Barton Street!

P.P.S. Three Abbey Green had a special and we received a free spa pass for the Thermae Spa -- my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed this hot-water spa with 2 pools (indoor and outdoor) plus 4 steam rooms (eucalyptus mint, lavender, frankincense, mountain pine).... we didn't have time to explore the rest of the options, but wholly recommend this as a highlight of our trip. Thanks for the 2-hour spa pass, Sue!!
