“Perfect location for wandering Shrewsbury”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

We had not been to Shrewsbury for about 20 years so decided it was time we did. The Lion and Pheasant is Tom Tom friendly but the hotel directions are invaluable as we overshot the first time and it was a big loop back ! Car parking is under the arch behind the hotel I would not like to be in a big 4x4! The hotel is light and airy, the staircase is lovely (there is no lift) our room was light and bright, the bed was excellent but not Kingsized, bathroom was fine. We had dinner by the fire which was lovely it was a Monday so it was a slightly reduced menu but still loads of choice and excellent value. We slept well our room 11 was at the back and very quiet. Breakfast was a mix of self serve fruits, cereals etc and cooked to order hot dishes. Very good. This is an ideal spot for a leisurely walk around a small beautiful historic town with some really wonderful individual shops.

A very clean and very well run hotel, couldent ask for more, this hotel is very well situated for town, just a little walk up the hill to all that Shrewsbury offers, that is pubs, reasturants and shops, the hotel although situated on the main road we didnot here that much trafic noise but a roo at the back of the hotel is a choice if available, the bar area situated on the ground floor is very nice and very well stocked, the staff are very very respecfull and the service is very good, the food is excerlent, the beds are very good.

There is only one word to describe this hotel.......FANTASTIC.....We stayed on the Sunday night before Christmas in the Loft Suite. This room is like no other we have stayed in, it is modern, yet retains a beautiful charm. The bath was out of this world and for a romantic night away to celebrate our 5th anniversary it was everything we could ask for. We ate dinner in the restaurant and the staff were attentive but not overpowering and the food was exquisite. We had a nightcap in the bar which is brimming with atmosphere. Its a short walk to the shops and other bars or restaurants but if you want my advice don't eat anywhere else if you are staying here because it is just wonderful. Breakfast was also lovely. Thank you for a beautiful and memorable anniversary evening. We would definitely stay again

My husband and I stayed at this hotel early December with another couple for a pre Christmas break. I booked on line where the cosy doubles stated king size beds, phoned to confirm and to book rooms at the rear of the hotel, based on the comments from previous residents re traffic noise at the front. I also confirmed this in writing. Upon arriving, one of the rooms had a king size bed, the other was a standard double. When I complained to reception I was shown another 'cosy double' which again had a standard double. As my husband and I are both over 6ft it was very unsatisfactory. I spoke with the duty manager who clearly wasn't experienced in treating customer comments with sensitivity-just defence! Despite assurances from the manager, that the room description would be amended, 3 weeks later, the web site is still stating that these rooms have king size beds which is simply not true! Our room was on the side front of the hotel and was very noisy. On a more positive note, the hotel has been refurbished in a very attractive and comfortable style, the breakfast was delicious and the location meant that we were able to leave the car and walk to shops, pubs and restaurants.

I've seen many reviews moan about the noise we didn't hear a peep all night. few minor things not great where small car park and the way some people parked there cars there taking up multiple spaces.

Sampled the main menu in the evening food was all nice did get the idea the roast potatoes where left over from lunch but otherwise great.

Breakfast was spot on the young girl serving was a little lethargic and tired maybe due to Christmas period but food was spot on with our requests. I'm knit picking really overall great we will be back

We booked this hotel for a romantic stay and to do some Christmas shopping in Shrewsbury. Our stay didn't get off to the best start - entering the hotel it was hard to see the reception desk - hid as it was behind people milling about in the bar and a large xmas tree - it makes you feel a bit awkward when you're stood there with your luggage wondering if you're even in the right place! Once we'd found the receptionist we were advised that our car would be ok to be left on the street whilst we checked in as there would be no traffic wardens at that time of night - very wrong as we got back to our car half an hour later to find a parking ticket!
That annoyance aside, the remainder of our stay was very enjoyable. The room (on the top floor at the back) was very clean and the bed very comfortable. Despite worries about noise from the bar downstairs there was actually none at all and we slept really well. The furnishings were (as others have said) of a shabby chic style. Perhaps if anything the room was too spartan decor wise - but that was a minor issue.
The breakfast room was lovely and the food very nice. Some of the staff at breakfast could perhaps do with a refresher course in hospitality as replacing the surly/sulky looks with a welcoming smile or too would do wonders for the overall experience for guests and there were other staff members there who were aware of this and were a credit to the hotel.
We did not dine at the hotel as the restaurant was fully booked both nights of our stay so cannot comment on the quality of the food. But based on the quality of the accommodation, we would definitely choose to stay here again.

Room Tip: Top floor at the back made for a very good night's sleep.
