“Great place to stop off for lunch!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014

Cold, but sunny day out in Shrewsbury saw us visit the Lion for lunch. Charming, traditional inn with oak panelling & roaring fires. Very warm welcome from the Romanian waitress (Georgie) with such a lovely smiling face. We gave our order & asked for individual bills. Not phased at all, she duly responded as asked. Food was excellent & the service equally so. We (six of us) are unanimous in giving The Lion 5 stars!

We stayed at the Lion Hotel for one night on 15/02/2014. Very easy to find, centrally located and no problem parking.

Were greeted at reception (or not) as 3 staff were chatting amongst themselves and didn't end their conversation when we arrived at the desk.

The room was pleasant and very fitting with the historical atmosphere of the hotel- however I had to ring reception and request the bedding was changed as there were ( I hope) tea stains on the duvet and mud on the valance sheet - they promptly changed the duvet, the valance sheet was however not changed.

My husband had requested non feather pillows when he booked as I'm very allergic to feathers, The pillows on the bed were duck feather so this led to another call to reception who very promptly brought us hypoallergenic pillows.

We ate in the hotel's Hayward restaurant, and enjoyed the lovely 5 course Valentines menu, The restaurant was empty which was surprising as all the food was lovely! The restaurant staff were very helpful and were able to arrange an alternative course for me as I'm allergic to shellfish and this was a course on the set menu. When we were leaving the waiter advised us of the busy times for breakfast the following morning so we could avoid this. Great customer service in the restaurant we never had an empty glass as staff were prompt in refilling and checking how our meal was.

I didn't have a great nights sleep due to noise from the room next door (creaky floorboards etc) and the expected noise from the town centre, it was a Saturday night to be expected and my Husband slept fine.

Breakfast on Sunday morning was very good, did have to request a new cup as there appeared to be lipstick? on the rim (It looked like blood, but i'm sure it wasn't).

Lovely Place, Nice for a short break

Needs a bit of love e.g. if you paint the walls white, give them a wash down our room could have done with a lick of paint, there was a hairdryer which from the style and appearance of it I predict it to be at least a decade older than me (I'm 25), and maybe have the reception staff get a lesson in customer service from the restaurant staff.

No goodbye at reception, again 2 of the 3 chatty crew were engrossed in a conversation.

Would return.

Room Tip: our room 224 faced the town centre, very noisy of a weekend,

My boyfriend and I stayed here for his birthday in February. The parking is limited as anyone can park there but luckily managed to park in the 2nd car park. The building itself is beautiful. The room we stayed in was classified as an exec double and was as described. The bed was very comfortable and the style of the room suited the rest of the hotel. The bathroom could do with a revamp but was adequate for one night. I would say it is a little over priced. Overall the hotel is lovely and I would recommend anyone stay here! Perfect location!!

Purchased a 'Living Social Deal' for 2 nights with breakfast and a meal on the 1st night. The meal was excellent, drinks reasonably priced. Our room was at the front a bit draughty but that is due to the age of this Grade 2 listed building. Sat in the lounge with a great open fire!!!! Really enjoyed looking round this hotel which is full of character and what we expected.
A really central hotel.
Staff really helpful. Enjoyable break despite the weather.

My boyfriend and I purchased a deal to come here for 2 nights with breakfast. The hotel is gorgeous and very oldie worldie, even down to the creaky floor boards which we loved. It is all kept to the character of when it was built which is beautiful. The breakfast was lovely too, the bar area and the 2 sitting areas are pretty, especially sitting by the big open fire at night. The staff were very helpful and nothing was ever to much trouble. The car park at the back of the hotel was a great find, it is owned by the hotel and we were only charged £10 for the 2 nights to park there and we could come and go as we pleased. As parking is difficult in Shrewsbury we found this a great advantage. We would recommend staying here.
