Not awful but pretentious for what it actually offered. Positives: the location is great and the valet parking efficient and very useful. Reception welcoming. On the other hand, why call one large bedroom 'the King James Suite'? Surely a suite involves more than one room plus bathroom. It was positioned at the back, which curiously is noisier than the front since it's closer to the main road. Fortunately that didn't matter too much as the next morning was a Sunday. And more importantly, the said 'suite' was positioned next to a function room, separated from us by a very thin partition, which was booked out for the night of our stay! There was a lot of noise in the early evening but we didn't realise what was going on - when we returned at 10.30 from eating out, a deafening racket filled the room from the local folk group or something. We rang Reception to say that there was a lot of noise from the adjacent room and were blithely told as above that the room was booked out for a musical function! Of course we had been given no indication in advance, which is just staggeringly rude. They wound up their business around 11.30 and we had the opportunity of getting to sleep with the echoes of 'With a Pickaxe in my Hand' ringing in our ears! No apology or conciliatory offer for this. So, apart from the parking guy, nul for customer service.

Room Tip: Do not take the 'King James Suite' - ask carefully about functions booked in the hotel and a...

We stayed here for two nights and found the hotel to be extremely clean. The bed was extremely comfortable and rooms were nice and room. The hotel location is central to Shrewsbury and backs onto a street which is home to a few quirky shops and cafes.

On arrival we were met by the hotel receptionist who appeared to a little rude at first until we explained we had booked a room. We went through all the formalities and was soon handed our room key. We stayed in the Princess Elizabeth suite which was both spacious and warming. The room contained a TV, trouser press and tea making facilities. The en suite room was bright and airy but the air extractor fan was quite loud whichever side of the room we were stood. The welcome booklet found on the desk showed a list of restaurants we could visit which were referred to as being shown in the front of the booklet, except they were not there. We headed to the reception and the information was extremely vague and lacking knowledge. We asked about the spa and its location and headed off to seek it.

My curiosity takes us to some fantastic places. I was feeling excited whilst taking a grand tour through the hotel, walking along creaking floorboards whilst becoming lost within the maze of beautiful dark wooded corridors. We located the spa area which to the left had a small fitness gym which I found to be of good standard and caters for anyone who just feels the need to burn of some calories. It was not huge but the small number of equipment was adequate to train most muscles in the body. I personally used the treadmill.

We had taken a look at the jacuzzi and sauna area which, we had mixed views about. We found the sauna to be impressive, the shower not to be working and the jacuzzi to be fairly retro with a lack of any true force when the jet forces were switched on. Saying that, we found the warm water quite comforting. There was a middle door. The door was locked but we could smell peroxide or something. A salon?, a pool? or a cleaning store? Who knows? Apparently there was a beautician who resides at the hotel but we could not find the location. The hotel staff were lacking any sufficient knowledge or guidance as to the various facilities the hotel had to offer.

The hotel, we believe, is part of a portfolio of other local businesses of which one of those is Chambers. Chambers is a restaurant located out of the main doors and follow the road towards the left. As we opened the door we were met by a garish figure (not a member of staff) which I think was a judge statue of some sort. It made us both jump. Oh yeah, we are boyfriend and girlfriend sorry. I ordered beef medallions with red wine jus or gravy as I put it. My girlfriend had chicken with spring onion mash. Now, I have to say that we were treated to one of the finest culinary experiences we have ever experienced. The steak medallions were fresh, tender and melted in my mouth. The chicken was absolutely delightful. We felt like we were both treated to a five star meal. The member of staff behind the bar who doubled up as a waiter was very knowledgable about the menu items. He was a friendly gentleman who had a lot of knowledge and facts about Shrewsbury.

I was personally surprised to hear that the young gentleman who had prepared our food was, I believe, 23 and was filling in for the head chef who was called away to another restaurant had prepared our meal. Not that I am ageist in any way but I wish I was equally as talented at his age. Our dessert was amazing too and was presented to a high standard. I would eat there again soon.

Going back to my curiosity. There was a decanter and a set of glasses on the front desk counter. I found out what it was on the last day we stayed when another couple were offered a glass of sherry on their arrival. We don't like the stuff but... well you know.

We would most definitely come back to the hotel again if we could find it at the same price we did. The full rate was a bit expensive for us per night. I have told people about the hotel and how beautiful it and Shrewsbury is. I can't see the price tag being justified though.

We hope you enjoyed our first ever review :)

Considering the very central location in this medieval city, and the well managed valet parking service, the Prince Rupert is excellent value for money. Certain aspects of the decor are indeed just a little tired, but very clean and comfortable. Reception staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful, and very professional.

Stayed in the 12 century mansion room. We were sent back in time! 4 posters bed, roll top bath and bags of rustic character. Stayed on dinner, bed and breakfast deal. Staff were great and with valet parking and a city centre location. It's all good.

This hotel is in a beautiful, historic building in the heart of Shrewsbury. Very convenient location and valet parking is brilliant. Sadly the interior is looking tired, particularly the bar area. We had a suite far away along some very scruffy, dingy corridors with scruffy carpets and cheap nasty fittings like the internal doors. Once inside rooms were good, especially the light sitting room. Bed was extremely comfortable and linen clean. The bathroom was poor. The shower was no more than a dribble from a sort of shampoo spray. Breakfast was fantastic. The choice of food was excellent both from the buffet and hot food served to order. Waitress service was excellent.

The hotel is in a terrific location for the town...as it is a very old hotel it may be charming for some..just found it a bit dull and dark to be honest.

The staff were friendly enough...valet parking meant you could just leave the car and it would be brought back for you...great as parking is a nightmare in this town.

Breakfast was good...nicely cooked to order and a reasonable buffet for continental...not the best ever but fine.

Must admit my bathroom was pretty poor in that it was just tatty for the money paid I don't feel it was up to scratch but this area all the hotels and B&B's do overcharge IMO for what you get.

Not sure I'd stay here again to be honest...but then again if you want to stay in town not many better alternatives.
