“Lovely location but shame about the refurbishment”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2014

This hotel is in a fantastic location. Set amongst woods and countryside but only a very short walk into Ludlow town centre. The room was ok with great views of Ludlow Castle and the surrounding countryside. It did lack some of the extras that other hotels have, e.g. hospitality tray was a bit sparse, no tissues until the last day, no showercap or good array of toiletries. I think when the building work is finished they will be a lot more organised. The cooked breakfast was faultless and the two days we had dinner there was very good. All in all, good value for money. Our car was very dirty though, compliments of the builders!

Booked an overnight stay some months ago whilst en route to Snowdonia. We were advised about a week before our planned stay that the hotel had changed hands and was undergoing some renovation work which was running late, and we were offered a small discount as there would be no restaurant or bar facility. As it was short notice and only an overnight stay we continued as planned, but were rather surprised on arrival at the extent of the work being done, and the effect on the whole property.
This review will be very limited as our use of the hotel was confined to our room and a breakfast room which was newly decorated and almost completed. Our room was one of the large doubles which was comfortable and in good condition, with a nice modern bathroom. However, the building work was right outside the window, with several builders working on the new roof area within feet when we arrived, and one of them arrived the next morning at 6.15 with little thought for sleeping guests. Breakfast was a limited buffet and hot breakfast cooked to order, which was excellent. The two members of staff we met were efficient and friendly.
This hotel is in a lovely situation just outside the town with some nice views up towards the castle, and is an easy short walk up into the town. As our visit was mid-June I would hope that the work is nearing completion for future guests. I have to say that had we been fully aware of the extent of the work we would have cancelled our booking, particularly as there was no public space to use in the hotel, and of course no bar or restaurant.

Lovely hotel, undergoing extensive renovations to the property, which was running a month behind time. Discounts offered by email before we left Australia, so it was a nice gesture as their restaurant and bar could not be accessed. Beds a bit tough on our backs but we are nearly 60 so it may be okay for others. Shower has no pressure at all, we were on the top floor of the hotel so the water struggled to get up that far, but the bathroom was a good size. Room was an average size for a B & B. Don't like the 8am breakfast start time, we are early risers and had leave without having breakfast due to the big day of travel we had planned. Breakfast should start no later than 7am, but that is just a personal thing

Room Tip: If you hate stairs ask for a room on a lower floor, impossible to navigate heavy suitcases up three...

We decide to do a last minute overnight stay at one of my fave places Ludlow. Late rooms showed that a room was free here at the Cliffe...The Hotel has just been taken over and is under refurbishment, but one of the staff e mailed us to explain all this, but as it is so local to the town and has parking we didnt mind. We have to say,, we were made very welcome, the room was comfy and had everything we needed, breakfast was good and the price was reasonable..especially as the only other place available at short notice was the same price but witgh no en suite and no breakfast provided!! On top of all this we were given a £20 voucher to return and we will definately be returning when it is all complete...Good luck to you all on your new venture and it will look brilliant when it is finished.

We have just returned from our many visits to the Cliffe Hotel over the last 4 years and have just noticed the comments about the new owner.
Let us make it quite clear that the hotel is not in a dilapidated state and we have been in 5 star hotels where that standard is not as good as the Cliffe Hotel. The food is great and wholesome and we would rate it as first class. The rooms are spotless and well maintained. Most of all what makes or did make this hotel superb is the Owner Helen and all of her friendly staff not to mention the friendly locals who we have had many great nights with. Without question the owners and staff make a hotel great so how in the future it will work out who knows?
The hotel is supposed to be have many alterations and serving Mediterranean style food and wine with rooms so will not be a Hotel. We like good fresh food that hasn’t been messed about with and so having said all this sadly this has been the last time we will stay at the Cliffe Hotel.
We wish Helen and all of her staff all of our best wishes for the future and you will all be sadly missed by us.

Room Tip: Cannot comment now as alteration will be done

This is towards the new owner of the cliffe. If you are still in business in a couple of months I will be shocked. You are so rude to me on the phone when you phoned me. Telling customer on the phone I'm talking not you and people like you, is not acceptable from somebody in the hospitality business. I was planned to stay at the hotel in April but due to building works taking pace I did not want to stay there. I tried other hotels in ludlow but to no look. I got told by the new owner that I was lying and he had found lots of hotels that were cheaper for me that would be better suited to me. He said the hotel is in a dilapidated state with the currant owner. If that the case why are so many good reviews. if any one reading this has sense don't book to stay in the cliffe once Helen give up the keys to the hotel. I wish her and all her staff good luck and the new owner all the bad look with the cliffe and hope he goes under.

Wonderful breakfast and choice the hotel is a very short walk along the river and over the bridge to the town centre albeit up a 1/4 hill
Interrupt your trip with a coffee at the riverside Green Cafe ( Top of your Restaurant List)
If you want to spend a bit more say £70 on the sampler menu at the Michelin starred " Mr Underhills"
Staff were extremely friendly and helpful
Rooms at the side and front are much better for views
