“Comfortable stay”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

We enjoyed our stay. The room was comfortable, the staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was a standout (as was the service by our young waitress)! The best part of the stay was an after-dinner stroll back towards the town and great views of Ludlow Castle. It looked sensational in the twilight with the bridge and stream in the foreground. Some beautiful snaps taken here.

I'm pleased you had a comfortable stay at the hotel and that you enjoyed the breakfasts. The view of Ludlow Castle from the hotel in the evening sunlight I agree is sensational.

This small hotel is located just outside town and across the river on a quiet hillside overlooking the castle. Parking was ample and free. The 10-15 minute hilly walk into the town was about as "convenient" as driving there and parking in a paid lot. Our room was bright and spacious and featured a fine, modern bathroom. Hospitality in the usual sense was on the thin side, with no attendant at the little reception counter at any time. The hours of the little pub seemed unpredictable to us. On two of our three nights, we were told that due to a group reservation, we could not dine before 8:30pm, even in the pub. Considering the inconvenient alternative of walking to the town, the least they could have done was open the pub for pub grub. This kind of experience seems to have happened to other reviewers. The explanation offered was that "we are only a two-star hotel." The breakfast service, on the other hand, was quite friendly with a full English menu. Good wi-fi in the room, although not reaching the dining room. The ancient town of Ludlow was delightful, and not at all crowded except on market days.

I'm pleased you found the location of the hotel convenient for your stay in Ludlow. The reception desk is monitored by CCTV and a bell is located on the desk if you need service. As a small hotel I have one cook in one kitchen so there were limitations with service which we mentioned that evening. Bar hours can be found in the folder in your room and as stated residents can have a drink at any time of the day until 11.00pm. I hope that the good breakfast service, modern bathroom, parking and free wi-fi made up for our short-falls.

We stayed for one night on a walking weekend and found that the rooms were clean and well equipped. We were all tired after a long hot day and so ate in the restaurant. We all enjoyed our meals, which we agreed we good value. Breakfast was really tasty, with good quality bacon and sausages served (a nice change these days). The hotel staff were friendly and efficient especially the young pair who served us breakfast.

All in all a charming, well run small hotel for a short break

My wife booked this hotel for us for a 2 night stay as a treat for my 52nd birthday. It's tucked away in back lanes just across the river from Ludlow but it only takes about 15 minutes' very pleasant stroll to get to the centre of the town even if part of it is steeply uphill.

Helen the manageress was very pleasant and helpful on check in and we went to the first floor to room 2. Initial impressions were immediately that this is far better than a 2 star hotel. The room was very spacious, nicely furnished, and it looked to me as if it had been redecorated and recarpetted quite recently. It's a shame that the view is of a mobile home park rather than the castle, but such is life.

There was one minor problem though in that the bathroom had a liberal sprinkling of what appeared to be dog hair on the floor. We decided to inform the staff and they were most apologetic, immediately leaping into action to deal with this. They confirmed the last occupants had had a dog. This is the only reason I do not give this hotel a 5, although their response was exceptional. Aside from this the bathroom was perfectly clean, just a very small amount of tired grout in the shower.

We ate there the first night and the food was more than satisfactory and very reasonably priced, as was the bar. Breakfasts were exceptional with all the meat being sourced locally.

Ludlow is a beautiful town and this is an excellent base from which tio explore it - really peaceful and tranquil. You could have heard a pin drop in the room at night even with the windows open because of the heat. The bed was very comfortable too.

Excellent, and I wouldn't hesitate to return.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your stay at the hotel. I can only apologize once again for the over-sight with the bathroom cleaning. Ludlow is indeed a beautiful town and I'm pleased you found the Cliffe a good base for your stay. We hope to see you again one day.

This hotel is right outside of Ludlow. You can see the castle from some of the rooms and the town is a reasonable uphill walk away. The room we had was good size and met any expected standard of cleanliness and comfort. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There are rooms on both the first and second floors (UK understanding) so if stairs are a concern ask for a first floor room. Parking is adequate. The hotel has a restaurant, a main reason we chose a hotel, and in this case we would rate it average by Tripadvisor standards.

It was good of your to write a review of your stay. I'm pleased you were comfortable. There are 24 parking spaces but as you say some of the 10 minute walk into town is uphill.

I have just returned from a three night stay with friends at The Cliffe. We were very happy with the friendly, relaxed service and atmosphere. The owner and staff couldn't have been more helpful and the rooms were comfortable, clean and well appointed. The breakfasts were excellent, as was the dinner we had on one night - locally sourced food, well cooked and very generous portions! The location of the hotel is very good - quiet and peaceful, yet only 10 minutes walk from the centre of town, even for four ladies "of a certain age". We had a wonderful break and hope to return soon.

Stayed here in 2010 with my son. 2 weeks ago my wife and 3 of our teen aged children were traveling this way and I booked this hotel again. We were not disappointed. The only reason this is a 2 star hotel is because there is no lift. You have to schlepp up the stairs. Everything else about the hotel is 4 star. Rooms are clean. We had a great bathroom with a shower you could take a stroll in. We did not have dinner here for a couple of reasons. The owner was having a family reunion and warned us that she could not provide meals until after 8PM. That was no problem. We walked 10 minutes to Ludlow centre and ate there. And that is the beauty of this hotel. It is in a very quiet area but easy walking distance to the castle and market. Hopefully we will get to beautiful Shropshire again. Certain that the Cliffe Hotel will be on the agenda.
