Stayed Fri/Sat night with partner for a birthday. Earlier reviews on Trip Advisor talk of small rooms, but this is not the case now as they've remodelled the rooms in the main building and there are now only 3 rooms (suites). Ours had a nice big bed, a sitting room with a Samsung 8000 flatscreen TV, and a bathroom with both a trendy steam/shower and a bathtub. Very cool. In the corner of the sitting room was a hidden sink/fridge/kettle etc with tea/coffee/milk.

The room looked out over the river and the cottage-style garden, both magnificent.

Breakfasts were good, opted for the full English both mornings.

Dinner was superb, 8? courses, and had the accompanying optional wine fixed menu to go with the food. Definitely worthy of its Michelin star, worth going if only for the food.

Well worth a visit, if I go back to Ludlow (which is a really pretty and quite busy market town), I'll return to Mr Underhills.

We stayed for 2 nights for my husband's birthday. There are some lovely touches, fresh cakes in the afternoon, water and biscuits for your drive home, and a highly spec'd "Shed" where we stayed.

The location is a short walk into Ludlow and very attractive in the sun. We felt the menu wasn't geared up to people dining for 2 nights in a row as it was repetitive, if good. Service was OK, no waiting, and friendly staff. However, only the owner was able to give good descriptions of the food, especially the cheese board. For somewhere priding themselves on their food this is, in my opinion, unusual.

The fact that everyone eats from a single set menu, mostly choosing a wine tasting menu, and all seating at the same time, does make for a slight conveyor belt feeling. Whilst making it operationally efficient this isn't great for atmosphere.

Morston Hall in Norfolk, has a similar mandatory menu. However, tiered dining times and better trained staff make the dining experience come across as more exclusive. It is also significantly cheaper for accommodation which is on a par for space and specification and their menus are more diverse for those staying more than 1 night. (P.S I don't have anything to do with that establishment, I just provide comment for those who have also been there to benchmark this review by).

This was not the first time that we have eaten at Mr Underhills and as usual the food was unbelievably good. The service was fantastic, we were not rushed nor left waiting for anything and the atmosphere in the restaurant was charming. Previously we have stayed in the "shed" which has received good reviews but this time we were booked into one of the newly refurbished suites. The suite that we had was beautifully designed, with a lounge area, bedroom area and bathroom. The room was spacious, light and airy and the lounge had a gem of a cupboard with a pre filled cafetiere, home made shortbread and chocolate cake, kettle etc. (for anyone that likes their gadgets the tv in this room is the thinnest & best picture tv I have ever seen - recessed neatly into the wall!). The bathroom was well thought out, with plenty of space and a separate bath and shower. The shower is also a steam room, providing a private spa! We had a glass of champagne bought to room on arrival and spent a relaxing hour or so getting ready for dinner. breakfast was fabulous, would recommend the smoked haddock scrambled egg and crumpets! Overall a fantastic stay in a wonderful setting topped off with Magnificent food.

We visited Mr Underhill's on 10 May which was a Thursday and were pleased to see that the room was quite full which added to the atmosphere. There were 4 of us in our group and we all enjoyed the food immensely. Every course was carefully thought out and presented with pride and eaten with much enjoyment. The idea of having a set menu is a good one as it allows the chef to concentrate on excellence which was certainly achieved. The courses were not rushed and we felt comfortably replete when we left at about 11pm.

The setting of the restaurant is second to none, particularly at the moment with the river so full. Overall a lovely evening.

The food and setting are definitely the major assets for Mr Underhills. However, our recent stay was overshadowed by feeling somewhat "processed" by the owners, who seemed to have forgotten who was the customer was, with their slightly unfriendly/bullish and stubborn attitudes. The rooms, although recently refurbished and now well appointed, are overpriced STARTING at £265!! It would have been nice to have had some dialogue/contact with the chef during the evening meal; and having to pre-order breakfast the night before is unforgivable for a Michelin star venue .. surely breakfast for a maximum of 8 people can't be that tricky! A memorable meal and o/n stay ... but I'm not sure for the right reasons. Would we go back ... sadly not!
