My husband and i decided to book tickets for the Ludlow medieval weekend 24/25 November 2012.We chose The Feathers hotel as it was avilable for the sunday night at booking.com
We arrived and welcomed the free parking at the rear of the hotel.
The hotel is a fantastic tudor / jacobean building full of atmosphere. The staff were very welcoming and polite and the hotel has that traditional historic feel you only get in uk hotels !!
Our room was very clean and spacious with all you need for a lovely stay. The hotel was so nice with lots of creaks and traditional features,i just loved the James the 1st room with beautiful jacobean fireplace and lovely chairs to lounge i expected a tudor guest to wander in anytime.
If you love comfort and cleanliness with a sense of history all around you then make this your next stay !!
They do weddings and functions and the dining room is large and spacious. We had a gorgeous breakfast.
Sorry there is no fitness centre ticked by mistake

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room we had 121 it was great

My Husband and i came for a weekend away in historic Ludlow as many friends have recommended it to us. First impressions of the Feathers was that the exterior was breath taking, fantastic historic building. The inside although a bit dated was quaint. The rooms were quite run down and just needed some attention, we had no heating in our room which wasn't very pleasant.
Overall Ludlow is a great town lots of lovely places to eat especially if you drive out a bit. I would come back to this hotel in the summer when no heating is required.

For our family get-together we booked four rooms for 2 nights at The Feathers. The rooms were clean and comfortable, but those at the front overlooking the busy main street were a bit noisy.Car parking was potentially a bit of a nightmare, with the quite small car park being on a first come first served basis, but it all worked out OK,with a bit of patience and common sense.
The exterior of the hotel is a real treasure, and there are a number of public rooms inside which echo the ancient ambience of the place.Other areas tended to be a bit nondescript and ordinary,
in need of refreshing and some tlc.But there is undoubtedly an olde worlde charm which pervades the hotel overall, and we felt privileged to be part of it.
The central location of the hotel is perfect for getting to know the town, and its famous castle.Once you've parked your car there's no need to use it again,as everything is within reasonable walking distance.
Our evening meal in the restaurant on our first night was excellent, with an interesting menu of well-prepared dishes, with something to suit everyone. The full English breakfast in the morning was a little underwhelming and ordinary, but palatable.Sevice was attentive and friendly.
A hint of ghostly presences in two of our bedrooms, with the characteristic sulphur smell being
reported and chill winds wafting over the beds in the night, plus some strange inexplicable noises.
Room 211 is the one to watch out for ! All good fun.We decided they were friendly ghosts.
Our visit coincided with the Ludlow Medieval Christmas Fayre,so the town was heaving,as were the public areas in the hotel. We had a problem trying to find somewhere to sit and have a lunchtime sandwich. We were told we couldn't take food into the Residents' Lounge,so we had to wait half an hour for a table in the bar. This was a fairly minor niggle however, and overall the whole experience was very enjoyable and we would certainly jump at the chance of a return visit.

Room Tip: If you want a good night's sleep, choose a room at the back of the hotel.

Staying over for the Ludlow Christmas fayre this old inn exudes charm. Our room (at the back of the hotel) was peaceful, car parking was for residents only (thank goodness) and warm hospitality from the hardworking restaurant team. We ate in the rosette awarded restaurant for dinner and weren't disappointed. Beautifully presented food, excellent service from the restaurant team (although it was fairly quiet), the downstairs bar / front of house areas were busy all the time.
Breakfast was a good offer, although to have run out of fresh fruit salad, yoghurts and danish pastries by 9.15 am wasn't very good, since breakfast runs until 10.30 on a sunday.
The upstairs residents lounge is full of history and we sat in here, however it did seem a fair few non-residents invaded it on the Saturday evening, which spoilt our relaxation, it is after-all a "residents lounge" and we paying good money to stay over.
Creaking floorboards, ghost hunting and historical parts add to the charm of this inn, which is in a brilliant location for the town centre.
Would i stay again is always the critical factor..... Most definitely a Yes ;-)

Room Tip: The best you can afford, four poster!

Yes it's a little faded but what a privilege to stay in such a historic hotel. I lay there wondering who had slept in the room in the past .
The evening meal was very nice. The breakfast was also good, plenty of variety eg full English and continental .
There was even a quiz in one of the oldest rooms. I would love to stay there again .
The hotel was right in the centre of the town and a short walk to all the historic attractions. The beautiful St Lawrence church, The castle and loads of lovely old black and white buildings. It's a photographers dream especially on a sunny day when the sky is blue. There are lots of nice old pubs and nice coffee shops to enjoy.
I would go early in the year before it gets taken over with us tourists .

Centrally placed in Ludlow this beautiful building hosts a reasonable hotel - but it has its drawbacks. Whole place is a little run down. Rooms are nice (quaint) but slightly jaded.
Only ate breakfast - which was nothing special - Avoid the Scambled eggs (yuk).
Car park is small and tight - not for the faint-hearted. Get in early to get a space you can negotiate out of.

There's a lot to be said for a) visiting Ludlow and b) the joy of staying in one of Ludlow's lovely old beamed buildings. And certainly, if all you care about are those two things, then the Feathers Hotel in Ludlow is spot on.

However, remove those things and what you're left with is a really mediocre hotel. Rooms (as one would expect of an old building) are not particularly well ventilated and sound bleed between rooms - and from outside - is quite significant.
Decor would probably have looked great when it was last redone (the early 90's, perhaps?) but is delapidated and the quality of service, whilst amicable enough, isn't the most splendiferous I've ever encountered.

This is the type of hotel that clearly likes to rest on its old (and admittedly, beautiful) timbers. Nothing was awful (though the speed at which my cooked breakfast was served, and the rubbery nature of the bacon and eggs would suggest that it'd been sitting under a hot lamp for a good half an hour - not great), but then nothing was brilliant either.

Having stayed there twice - both times at the weekend - I can recommend that you ask for a room that's not at the front of the building since a couple of the local watering holes let out right below the windows. Had a much better time of it at the rear-side of the hotel.

One thing I *would* suggest you do is to have a night-cap in one of the truly cosy drawing rooms next to an open fire in a big comfy leather chair. I'm guessing you could do that even if you're not staying at the hotel though, so maybe just find yourself a nice local B&B and drop into the Feathers for that night-cap?

I'll be looking for other options the next time I go to Ludlow.

Room Tip: As above, go for rooms that aren't at the front of the hotel
