A tad late in doing this review, but the memory of our visit has not faded. Simply, if you are visiting Ludlow and are looking for top quality, but are not too concerned about luxury decor, book a table at the Green Cafe.
We went there on 6th April with some friends, having looked it up on TripAdvisor. Sat down a little later than booked, due to the restaurant being very busy, but the location - right next to the river - meant that waiting was not an annoyance. Luckily they put us indoors ... it might have been sunny, but it was still very cold outside.
I had the Seared salmon fillet, avocado, beetroot and fennel salad, rocket, lemon and caper dressing. My wife and both our friends had the Gnocchi, Italian style pork and garlic sausage ragu. Obviously I cannot speak for the Gnocchi other than to say they all enjoyed it. I can, though, praise the salmon to the rafters. It was exactly the right temperature, consistency, taste and every other attribute I could think of was just right. The only thing I'd complain about is not being able to have seconds, but that, of course, is a credit, not a debit. So often you eat a meal where the main item is good but the bits that go with it - veggies, salad or whatever - are a bit average. Not so with this salmon. Their choice of accompaniments was inspired. Pudding was just as nice ... soft centred meringues, bramley apple puree, whipped cream and caramel!
Having said all that, the astounding part of the whole experience was ...the price. If you went into The Green Cafe not knowing anything about its reputation, the decor and general look of the place would not give you the slightest inkling of the quality of the food, which is on a par with restaurants which would charge three or four times as much for the same level of cooking excellence. My salmon was a mere £9.50 and the entire lunch, for four adults and two children, came to around £85, and that included pudding!
